G'day people.. I'm looking to purchase a Hilux ~2002 model and im after some advice about the engines.
What is the better engine? I'm thinking the 6 but is there many probs with any of these?
Also is there any reason to steer clear of the SR5's?
Thanks.

Hilux V6 vs TD vs 4cyl

as far as the 2.7 petrol, it will cost you a fortune in fuel compared to the diesel and they also have a lot worse resale value.
turbo diesel best by far, but the diesel is still an excelent vehicle.
i personally have a 3l non turbo sr5, i cant see any negatives related to the sr5, auto engaging hubs, auto engaging 4wd, power windows, cloth interior, and a smoother rear tub, plus chrome wheels etc.
ive had mine off road a bit, through deep puddles with no issues with any electrics (ie hubs or transfer engagement) which was my only concern.

Resident Terrorist
V6 should be the 5VZ-FE 3.4Ltr. Same as in the 95 series prado. Havent driven one in a hilux but I would think it would be a pretty good power/weight ratio as they dont pull along too bad in the much heavier prado. There is always going to be the difference in fuel economy between a 4cyl TD and a V6, it really comes down to what you prefer.
Power will be better in the V6 for overtaking and fast offroad stuff like beach driving. TD will probably have better torque feel for slow offroad work etc. Dont know of any real problems with the V6, the timing belt job is a mild pain in the arse but pretty sure they changed from 100K to 150K intervals at some stage so its not a job you'll have to do often.
