Gday all just wondering if any one can provide any imformation on adusting the fuel on td42 Patrol. Photos would be appreicated. I need to turn the fuel down on a mate patrol that he just brought. It blow excessive smoke on hills. The person he brought it from fuel turned up after a full engine rebulid. Thanks in advance.

OK guys, sorry for having you waiting for so long. This morning I gave my TD42 a bigger diesel gulp for the weekend. This is what I do:
First, the tools you'll need.
One 13mm wrench
One 17mm socket
One small flat screwdriver
A ratchet and a few extensions
A socket U joint
On top of the IP (injection pump) locate this 17mm bolt which attaches the return line and loosen it. Be careful, this could be real tight if it's a long time since it was last removed. You can break the bolt or loose a washer. Loose it using the U joint. you need to move the return line out of hte way to access the fuel bolt.
Once again, as you remove the bolt, be careful you loose the washers. There's one on top and one below the return line
In this last pic you see the below washer and the fuel bolt. Mine obviously has no factory seal. Factory seal looks like this.
The bolt on the pic is the one that limits the travel of the IP. It's sort of a governor. But let's get back to the bolt we need (want) to adjust.
Loose the locking nut using the 13mm wrench
And then adjust the bolt. Clockwise to increase fuel. Just a 1/4 turn increases a lot of fuel. Also your idle speed will go up and idle with AC on will greatly increase. You´ll have to adjust this also.
Once adjusted, tighten the locking nut and put it all back together reversing the order.

P.D. Get a reliable pyrometer before playing with your fuel and don't push it past 1250 degrees F.

I always do 1/4 turns (back and forth). Try that. 1/4 should be OK, but you need a pyrometer to check EGTs.money_killer wrote:so in the 2nd last pic is that where the pump screw was standard. then the last pic is with it turned up 1/4 of a turn.

i took mine for a drive when it was would up for the turbo (3/4 turn) it hooked rev to 4k quick and easy reved to 4.5k no prob lots of black smoke but lol.macneil wrote:yes i have a few diesel mechanic mates and they said the 1/4 turn trick i was just wondering how much it would give.. mine doesnt blow any smoke atm so might turn it up this weekend!

EGT on a NA TD42 gets very hot very fast with the fuel turned up.
when i had my turbo off, just running standard manifold and first length of pipe under the cab, didnt knock fuel back (only see 430* when turbo'd, even on long pulls with LPG, no LPG when NA) and it nearly hit 730* before i lost my bottle and pulled the boot out of it
and that wasnt a very long hill, so yes, be very careful upping fuel on an NA motor, more so than turbod
