front wheel hub help needed GQ patrol

Post by kurzo »

hey guys,

i put my car back together the other week and just did my mates today (both GQ deisels, front wheel bearings and hub rebuild) the thing that gets me is the fact that it spins freely until i put the free wheeling hub on and tighten it up its very hard to spin and then makes some very wierd noise's when taken for a drive.
with my car it was like the diff was locked in and in my mates car it wasnt but both heated up like a b**ch, i have done a temp job to fix this by just taking the free wheeling hub drive clutch out.

my Q is what would be causing the diff to heat up and lock in?

maybe the wheel bearings are too tight which would cause a lot of heat in there.

if you need to get a new hub, there are plenty of wreckers around the bayswater / lilydale areas.

It sounds as though there is no end play in the axle. Before putting the fw hub can you move the axle slightly in and out. There should be some play. If not when you put the fw hub on and tighten the bolts the axle can bind on the inside of the hub. This would generate a fair bit of heat! You can test for this by slackening off the hub bolts slightly and seeing if the wheel/axle frees up.

If there is no such end play you might not have seated the CV correctly if you replaced it. Just changing the bearings should not make any difference to the axle length. What else did you change or rebuild?

If the axle is binding you could put a shim behind the stub axle flange but I would first try to find out the cause.

are they genuine cv's? Are they new?

or something is wrong in the assembly.

Sounds like bind up on the thrust washer. Could be in back to front.

You might also want to check that there isn't too much grease in the hub. If so, it could cause it to hydraulic. Not sure if the heat problem would be from there though.

I had a similar experience a while back, hub would get realy hot and bind after I had done a wheel bearing change...after I opened it back up I noticed the tab on the lock washer had broken off and gone through the bearing
