Have a look here http://www.offroad80s.com/viewtopic.php?t=124 for some pics of a front mount. You'll have to sign up to see the pics but

This is Emma's 80, cooler is just a 300mmx450mm bar and plate job from http://www.justjap.com with a combo of 2.5 stainless and alloy tube joined with silicone bends. My dodgy drawing shows where the piping goes, had to holesaw a hole in the drivers inner guard and squeeze the tube through a gap in the passenger inner guard but it all fits. Left enough room to flex and turn 38" tyres in 15x10 rims with only a 5" lift !!

What a good job on that. Even if I do say so myself.shanegtr wrote:Have a look here http://www.offroad80s.com/viewtopic.php?t=124 for some pics of a front mount. You'll have to sign up to see the pics but
It's the same justjap intercooler as shown above.
No need to cut holes or leave the grill off.
Allways been a TOYOTA man.
Now I'm old and grumpy as well.

I've fitted a number of 600*300*76 ebay style coolers and they have all worked well. Pretty cheap these days, just check the quality. Bit of work in the plumbing. Will fit an 80 with A/C and retaining the grill with a bit of careful fiddling.

i wouldnt have a clue if it made a difference , cause i fitted the turbo and cooler at the same time , but i can say that running at about 12psi, egts have never reached 550, so it probably does help... i will be doing injectors and injector pump some time next year, so should be getting some extra power from it, and egts too which is where the cooler should come handy.vSAHARAx wrote:UDM, Top Job!!! How much boost are you running in that? did the cooler make alot of difference?

Hey All
Right sourcing a cooler for my 80 series 1HDT, Is 2.5" oulets sufficient or would 3" be better and would i notice much difference between either or??? Ferog and UDM are your coolers overall diameters 600x300x76 (core 450x300x76)???
Cheers Troy

Yep mine is, it's this one from JustJap: Cooling-Pro Universal Intercooler - Large Type - 600x300x76 (3 Inch Inlet & Outlet)
Item Number CPLARGECOOLER-3INCH/60030076
We used reducer hosing and are running 2.5" through as with the exhaust, initially I wanted to go 3" but it was a matter of supplies available from the stores and we had limited time to get it done. I'm not sure whether this is a good choice or less good one but it made a fantastic difference, from what I could tell. At some stage down the track I'd like to redo both the hosing and exhaust.

About 8 years ago in Hobart I saw a turbo/intercooled 80 advertised (dealer) for a reasonable price so went for a look.
Dealer wanders over extolling the virtues of the turbo, telling me "it's a factory job" - on a 91 Standard......
Not sure which factory. The turbo looked not quite big enough for a Nissan EXA and the intercooler.....
Picture (if you can) an old Mini radiator laying accross the top of the rocker cover, attached with kinked radiator hoses. Then, to ensure there's airflow accross the fins,.....a heater fan/blower ducted into the bottom edge and picking up air from a hole hacked into the guard near the brake master cylinder.
I wandered away with my faith in the integrity of used car salemen completely shattered

Only concerns is. Would like to do the same setup as UDM behind the grill, but how does this effect radiator performance, i dont want the thing to start running hot when its working hard up the beach.
have you ever had water temperature issues Emma???? remembering ill be running Lightforce XGT's on the bullbar infront of the grill!
Is there anything i have to look out for?

Never, it's done a few long trips since and it's been perfect only issue is hoses not secured properly and blowing off under high boost ie-going up steep mountain hills & reaching 14psi, but that can be avoided.vSAHARAx wrote:Only concerns is. I have a T3 turbo and front mount setup.
Have to admit i did a shit job on the cut for the piping(under the headlights - very outta sight), but all piping Mandrel bent and have an ebay special 600 x 450 x 75mm front mounted intercooler.
Grill fitted nicely.
I do not have A/C or batteries to contend with so piping works fine.2" from turbo to step up 3" into I/C then 3" most direct route into modified and shortened intake pipe. Surpising lack of lag and good on hot days.
Will how this stands up to the new engine amd more fuel.
only have pics on phone - :(

nah mate, never had heating problems (before or after turbo), if it does get hot there is probably something else that needs sorting (radiator, etc)...vSAHARAx wrote:Only concerns is. Anyway, here is an update, got rid of all the piping over the engine, (dont laugh at my temporary wiring )

just curious was you intake manifold plenum chamber divided into two sections? my 1hd-t manifold is divided where the crosover pipe bolts on so front 3 and rear 3 cylinders have sperate plenums
--little update--
Just after 2 days I have ended up ditching the experiment
There was a serious air distribution problem, egts would rise quickly (even on a 5.00am startup) and would sit on 500 while cruising on the M4 and heaps of smoke.
The symptoms make me believe there was a cilinder or 2 not getting enough air, and probably making them run hot, even on boost.
So decided to change back before a hole was put through a piston.
ps.it did go nice though

yes, they are divided by a wall (about 7mm thick), it had to be ground off.80's_delirious wrote:very tidy mate !!

Yes I'd guess that at least #1 was suffering.udm wrote:--little update--

Rather than chucking the whole experiment, I reckon you just need to redesign the inlet a little more, move the PS reservior and bring the hose barb forward and triangulate the gap between a bit nicer.
