G'day all,
First time poster long time reader, I was out today and got stuck in a mud hole had muddy water all through the engine bay and everywhere else for that matter, got towed out and noticed a belt started smoking then snapped, got the hilux home and it seems the alternator packed it in and chewed the belt out and snapped it, its a 94 dual cab 2.8 diesel.
Does the alternator pack it in usually if it goes underwater?
Is there anyway of trying to repair or free it up myself?
Where to get a replacement/reco and what sort of price would i be looking at?
Thanks all in advance, just a bit worried coz i was told that it will probly cost be around 800 bucks for a reco, damn expensive alternator.
Cheers
Bandit

ok 120 is about normal price for a toyota hilux alternator. they get buggered when they get mud in them. give it a light tap with a plastic hammer. just like tapping something for fun when your bored kind of hard. but just get it re done.
do toyota alts. always blow easily, everyone ive seen has done it easy. nissan ones can take a good solid muddy soaking and still run fine. whats the deal.

Its a diesel Alternator they are totaly different to a petrol Hilux. They can get expensive.
As others said pull it off give it a good soaking in clean water and see if you can get movement out of it. It will prob need a couple of bearings and a set of brushes. The brushes usually require some soldering to change them. They are not a very complex alternator to rebuild. As long as you have reasonable mechanical skills. If the armiture is damaged(centre section with all the wire wraped around it) then you would be better off lokking for a reco or second hand one.

Ok got it out, what a pain in the arse spot its in.
It is full of crap but the nuts holding the case together are stripped, question is about this vacume setup on it is there suppose to be oil coming out of it? i would have assumed vacum as air not oil?
Cheers

The vac pump has an oil feed and drain to the motor as well as a vac line.

yeah you think toyota would put it in a more accessible spot seeing as it is a part that gets changed more regularly than most things on a car, more so than powersteering pumps and that. the oil is just to lube up the vac pump i think.

G'day all,
I have taken everything i can see removeable off the alternator, pump, brushes and all contact section off the back yet still cant seem to get the case apart to give a full clean, Got hold of a reco one am putting that in and going to keep working on the otherone as i flushed it out and have gotten a fair bit of movement back. want to keep as a spare.
Question is with the reco one before i put it in is there anything i can do to prevent this from happening again? was thinking of somehow affixing a type of mesh over all the areas that crap can get into it, or was i just unlucky for this to happen and i shouldnt worry about it even though im hooked on playing in muddy swamps.
Cheers Bandit

dont play in muddy swamps unless you like redoing them all the time. as i said ive seen so many toyota alts die when ive seen patrol ones get dirtier and more wet and survive.
