although i haven't had a comp test done yet, pretty sure i need a rebuild. but i'm wondering whether i should get it rebuilt, by a 2nd hand td42 or go complete conversion. what does everyone think? i'm not overly cashed up which is prob going to be a bit of an issue....

been done a few times
conversion : expensive.
Rebuild: if you get it done $7000 properly, head, cams etc (recently done by bloke in club, although he had 2 bent rods)
Used donk: they are around - probably the cheapest.
Ebay: $4000 for "rebuilt" engine.

Why do you think you need a rebuild?.
Does it blow smoke , have no power ?.

blowing smoke bad, white-ish blue smoke.....i also need the injector pump re-sealed. maybe, hopefully that is causing the smoke, but somehow i doubt it.....it's got enough power but it's also blowing blow-by smoke but only lightly.

How many K's on the motor? Could just need a re-ring kit to get another few years. Might be a cracked compression ring if ya getting blow-by vapor. Have you had head troubles/loss of coolant? If ya gonna open the head to re-ring may as well rebuild the head as well. Thats the prob you see... once you open her up its hard to know where to stop. Do a compression test to see if that shows up anything.
Good luck with it all and keep us informed.

Know how you feel. I'm going through the same thing at the moment. Mine took in dust one weekend (got past the airfilter), then a little bit of water the next. Getting a comp test done next week to find out how bad it is. Still seems to drive alright, but it's just not the same.
How much would a second hand turbo intercooled TD42 from a GU go for? I'd imagine it would drop straight in.
Seen this one on eBay. $14 000!!!!!

All up, my rebuild was just over 7K. Parts alone came to 5K using all Ni$$an bits. I did all the assembly work including replacing cylinder liners.
I had a shop do the cam bearings--very difficult to replace yourself, as you need a tool to ensure oil holes are lined up. Same shop ground crank and balanced--all up came to around $1800 i think.
Cylinder head overhaul came to 2K--this included replacing all the precomp chambers, valve seats, guides and seals and valves--i also had same shop replace gudgeon bushes and ream to size.

so got a comp test and all clear, appears to be related to the injector pump which needs to be rebuilt, which needed to be done anyways. so better than an engine rebuild!
