Howdy,
I have a widetrack 89 sierra and wish to change the steering box. Just wondering how people remove the pitman arm from the spline on the steering box? I dont have a puller of any description and it appeares to be a tad seized or rusted on. Ive been soaking it up with the wd 40 for a few days and have used a hammer to. Any tricks??

thanks Ian

hit the side of it with a hammer while using a prior bar to push it off, or go buy a puller!

Get a puller. It will still take the puller cranked up to breaking point, and a tap with a hammer to get it off.

Another option is to heat one side only with a gas torch. The expansion should loosen it.

IMHO trying to do it with a prybar will be a massive struggle. It might work, eventually, but a puller applies the force in the right direction.

try hiting it back together before trying to seperate it, You might have already tried this? tried and proven with stuborn bolts for me, sometimes they snap  most times it helps release ;)

I dropped by a mechanics workshop with the steering box pitman arm still on and had it pushed of nicely with a hydraulic press, maybe a better option if its a drop pitman arm your trying to swap over with out damaging....

Just buy a Pitman arm puller. keep the recept so if it breaks you can get a refund. It will take alot of force to get off so you might need a breaker bar. If its like mine you will break one of two. you might want to soke the pitman arm in lanotek first to help you.
