42s and road driving.

Post by ORSM45 »

for a while now ive planned on running 42s on my FJ45. do you recon it will look way too obvious for onroad, like if a cop sees me he's just gonna shake his head and ask 'what the hell are you doing?'

id love 42s but the better option is looking to be 38s. how do you think my axles/drivetrain will hold up being pushed by a 400hp 383 chev and being resisted by 42s?

are they gonna be a biatch to balance? what would driving at 100km/h be like on them?

would i be eligable to enter more comps with 38s than 42s? (dont really care about winning ;) )

thanks for any feedback.

i drove around on 38.5 x 14.5's, with about 400hp. the 9" axle bearing gave up, after a while. the cops left me relatively alone, (touch wood). they did upto 150kmh with out a drama. they were on 10" rims, and were not balanced. they drove nearly as good as the 35"all terrains. the only drama was the brakes were a lot less effective, but the performance didnt change much from 33" to 35" then to 38.5". i run a 400ci supercharged motor. i havnt got the 44's on yet. but i have bigger brakes, and more motor all going in at once.

mad! that thing sounds nuts.
interco have released a 39.5x15 inch swamper TSL now. (id prefer to go TSL to SX) although 2.5inches probably wont be noticable, as 39.5s are still bloody big tyres.
so may aswell do it right and get the 42s

Your steering linkages will wear quicker specialy if there not greasable.
and probably use more fuel not exactly airodynamic.
And you will go through bearings and the vibration will loosen every nut and bolt :D

I run 39.5 tsl swampers under my 45 and have not been hassled by the cops. they often look but just keep driving. my tyres are fine even at highway speeds and thats on 15X12 beedlocked rims. I have had no probs with brakes either but am running GQ diffs so have disks all round.
motor wise i have a 6.2l chev diesel.

42`S on stock CV`s  they will be like tooth picks when/if you have front locker, even more so with a 383. I used to bust a min of 1 cv per trip before I got the longs and that was with Q78`s (36) and a little turboed 2.8 lux (you have the same cv)

As for comps and tyre sizes, ALL winch challenge events and the out back challenge are a MAX 36" tyre limit, so even a 38 WILL knock you out of them. So that only leaves the Simex night pursuit and the pajero challenge (might even have tyre limit) and then nav runs which might also have tyre limits.

Basicly My opinion on tyre sizes for people that live in vic is if you ever want to compete then only get a 36 cause then you can do any of the comps down here. If you really want bigger then 36 either have 2 sets of tyres or just don`t compete in vic.

I want to go to a 38 on my lux but because I live on the border and want to do comps in vic as well as NSW I am better of staying within the tyre size limits.

The biggest tyre that WILL pass at all vicy comps is a 37 x 13 bogger on a 8 inch rim, they will not pass if on a 10 inch rim.

yep i agree with guts, all the comps in vic are 36 inch tyres as a max size. Im running the 35 simex and they are awsome. Id ring the wreckers and get a few spare c v s if your running stock gear.

Just wondered aswell what sort of rear wheel horse power are your getting from yours. Im getting 138 kw on gas, single imco mixer. long live the 383. shane

you'll definatly have to go longs...and spend some $$$ setting up the rig real well if its to stay on road more than off...would look fully sick though

my 38.5's are ok on the road... quieter than the 35" ET's I had before!! They are SX's though, so not as twitchy as a bias etc. Still very vague on the road but pretty sure that is more to do with the 4 link front.

I don't push over 100kph though as even though the vibes aren't too bad I don't want to shake my driveline to bits (wheel bearings, steering joints etc).

Oh, and I threw 6 golf balls in each tyre when I mounted them... dynamic balance. I thought it would suck, but works pretty well.

Also run internal beadlocks so you can't hear the balls rattling around on the rims.

AS much i would love to see you so it and get away with it,

If i was a cop as saw you cruising down the road with 38+ inch tyres on i would

A/ think your a goose
B/ Book yo ass so quick
C/ Ask you where you bought them from and say have a nice day...

Commmmawn Be real its a flippin tractor tyre, not a road tyre. !
The inertia and physical weight of the tyre is one thing, but the stress it would place on the rest of the drivetrain is OMG !

Mind you i think i 36 inch tyres is about as big as any road vehicle should have.

HAHA. thanks for the input fellas. alot of those facts have worried me punchy (specially the jelousy ;) ).

if i was to get 42s i dont think id waste my time with the stock CVs id just whack longs in straight away and hysteer arms, bomb proof links (possibly ram assist, one day  ). im gonna run a front locker but only use it when i have to. i have rear LSD but i wanna get a locker for the rear, which would get used more than the front. does anyone know the price of the cromo axles aswell?

id estimate at around 170-180kw @ rear wheels with 33s. im only estimating as i built exactly the same engine as a mate but his wasnt a stroker and his put out 150rwkw. runs twin gas research carbs.

its not my daily driver, but i want it still registered coz my corona (daily driver) wont tow it :D it will still take probably about 6 months to get it where i want it and by then ill have a camera to show yas all

thanks again

As probably one of the only people on here who have wheeled 42s on stock axles. I say go for it.

Drive accordingly and you will be fine. Matt pisani has a suzuki on toyota axles running 44" tyres. So yeah, I think on cruiser diffs with 42s you will be okay, leave more brakiung distance, allow for things to wear out a little faster, wheel bearings and such. I would not stress too much about it. Just go for it.
