Mate just bought a new zook yesterday.
drool speach.
its a LWB tub with canopy,
32 mongrels,
series 3(which the prev owner didnt know it had)
twin throat webber carbi
new motor
more spare parts than you can count.
2inch body and springs
rear lockrite
all for $1200..
now onto question
went for a wheel up at his works quarry last night(pissing with rain)
left it in 2wd and made it everywhere easy.
then i hear a sort of clunking grinding noise, look out the window
and the rear axel has come out a foot or so, ohh better stop.
How can this happen.
the backing plate was still attached to diff, and bearing was still behind it to.
My guess is that the bearing and locking collet has unpressed itself off the
axle tube.
Any other thoughts?

bearing
Sounds to me like someone has cheated in the past and re-used the old lock ring. These are designed for single use only and if re-used they tend to let the axle walk. Fit a new bearing and lock ring.. While you are at it you might as well fit some mini backing plates. Then you can remove the axle without touching the brakes.
