Transfer case questions . Bearings and found the noise maker

Post by nicbeer »

Hey,

I have diagnosed that i have a transfer case bearing/gear problem as it is noisy as with the transfer in N and going though the gearbox 1-5+R and it has more noise in 3-5 under load i presume and it sounds like it is the input gear/bearing. I was thinking about going for a gearset also (4.16,4.9s) but the 1L case does me for now.

would it be ok to do the cheap just do the input bearing or go the whole bearing kit through it ? i was considering getting the kit from the US (lowrange)

i have had a $ from bearings wholesalers of $311 ex for a kit inc a shaft? ((The transfer kit contains:- bearings, seals, gaskets, shaft, washers and nuts))

what shaft is this in there. if the input shaft, i have a spare 1.3 one here if that is ok to use.

** also is the late 1L box inc 4wd light the same bearing kit as the 1.3 gear case..

Thanks

Nic

the shaft u replace from memory is the idler shaft, has a pair of needle roller bearings running on it this is 99% of the cause for noisy transfers, get a bearing kit with shaft and do the whole lot, make sure its got the thrust washers in the kit aswell for that shaft. last time i got a price from here was around the 300 buk mark, prpbably alot cheaper overseas.

Only the `84 410 kit would be the same as 413. The earlier non 4wd light cases have a different gearset which has stub shafts on the end of the counter gear rather than an idler shaft.

The rebuild kit from low range is $79US (I just ordered mine to go with the 6.5s) not sure what it would be to post it.

for 50us to ship the kit. and i may buy the counter shaft and bearings local.

Is it needed to replace the shaft or only the bearing on the shaft?

found the noise maker

the bearings feel ok on the main shafts.

would be it ok for to do it on the cheap and replace the bearings on this shaft and the shaft only? i was thinking of maybe doing the input bearing also as was noisy when in N also in gear so i would think this is the main cause.

i am looking at gears later btw so dont want to spend the big $$ on this one.

long as i can i guess. from the plug with the magnet that came out it looks like it caught a lot of it. take a guess on 6m-year being fair.

one of the needle bearing is worn that i can see causing this wearing down.

oil was clean but as usual counldnt see any little fine bits in there. gears look ok also. i was going to flush out with oil/petrol as well.

Only thing you need the dealer for is the shaft, thrust washers and the needle bearings. All other bearings are industry standard sizes.
You'll need 1x 63/22, 1x 6306 and 3x 62/28 from your local bearing supply.
