does anybody know if anybody is doing stronger c.v's for WT sierra's ????

if so where and how much ?????

cos right now i'm either twisting the splines or exploding the bells !!

and im yet to replace the standard motor with a turbo'd 1.6 16v yet
so i'm gettin worried i'm really gonna start chewin thru them reallly quickily :oops:

AFAIK no-one makes a specific stronger C/V joint (there's an interesting debate thread on pirate about the whole axle strength on zooks).
However, a few companies make Birfield rings which strengthen the existing joint.
I have the Spidertrax ones in my zook with 1.6EFI and Rockhopper SIII
No probs so far...

another option may be to fit hilux diffs. It will probably cost you the same amount as a few CV's too!

While you are in pricing mode maybe you should hit Overkill up about grafting D44 outers (or similar) onto the end of a zook axle housing. It would be interesting to see how the pricing would compare (yes you would have to take into account axle shafts etc too). I'm pretty sure u-joint axles will give you a tighter turning radius, that's one advantage to consider.

Personally I think the best bang for buck solution is hilux axles.

I bought a bunch of stuff at the time so I ended up getting my Spidertrax rings through Rocky Road Outfitters.
I would not recommend them whole heartedly. There were a few problems.

Over the years I've imported a fair bit of stuff from the US and usually had no problems. I've found the best value for money shipping is USPS air.

What size tyres are you running mike? And do you have a front locker in there too?

I've heard that there may be some grinding involved to fit the CV (with the birfield ring on it) onto the car - was that your experience too? or did it just slide back in as per normal.

I'm asking because i want to know if there is any preparation required before fitting them - or could it just be an on-the-trail type fix.

Biggest tyres I run (so far :) ) are 31x12.5 Boggers with a lockright auto locker in the front & I run the boggers @ 3psi when I'm gettin serious. There is a some grinding required inside the knuckle for full clearance. I had my mechanic do mine as he was doin some other work so I got him to fit those as well. Took him a while to get the grinding just right but he was pretty pedantic (and hey I was payin for the time!).
The instructions that come with it are quite good so should be no real problems as a home job. Definitely not a field fix, they are a preventative so should be fitted before you hit any trail.
When people ask how well they work I can only say that I haven't broken a c/v yet...

I was thinking about buying a spare set of CV's and fitting the birfield rings to those and keep running my current CV's until (if) they do give up on me - then the track fix would occur and the new CV's would be fitted with the goods...

From what you have just said - perhaps this is not the g-o...

This isn't the excact thread but, if you put hilux diffs under a zuk, you get a mini hilux. you loose the advantage of having a skinny small car. I know there is many many pro's, but thats a con.

I have my front diff welded. a pain to drive with, but great traction, I've never had any probs with CV's yet. do they break more in rock crawling at low speeds or more likely to break when at speed up a hill grabing for traction on rocks?
just wanna know when most likely to break so I can aviod.

The birfeilds I htink are worth the money they increase the strenght of the cv by about 60% which is a lot stronger.Whith series three gearing you are putting a lot more torque throught the cv's . This however allows yo to crawl slower allowing less wheel spin and shock loading on the cv which in turns I think makes them last longer.

So can we generally assume that the listed price for the items on the spidertrax website in US dollars multiplied by two will equal what we pay here in Australian dollars?

At the moment yes our dollar is good but the shipping is still the killer I am working on a cheaper option.

give me sum measurements and i will make sum, for alot chaeper than $100 each , the material would only have to be 4140. basically all it is is a sleeve, to simple! :finger:
