GQ rear door stiff hinges and check strap questions

Post by grazza »

Hi all.

Problem 1:
The small left rear door on my GQ is very stiff so I decided to remove the check-strap thinking it was the cause. It made no difference, the hinges are the problem and are very stiff.

So I sprayed them for ages with CRC and Water Dispersement, waggling the door and lots of crap and dust came out but they are not much better. I am thinking of maybe removing the door with hinges and then soaking the hinge-end in a tub of petrol for a while - anyone have any other ideas?

Problem 2:
I have noticed that I can get the door quite a bit more open now without the check-strap in place. I know that there is a mod for the GU rear door to open it more but have not heard of one for a GQ.
At the moment I have a ladder attached to the outside of the door and this prevents the door hitting the body but the ladder will touch the rear light but this is not ideal - it could crack the light with enough force.
Any ideas how I can have the door swing wider and not break anything?

thanks

Door gap at maximum with strap removed:

Maximum opening, no check strap, ladder will touch light which is OK if care is taken:

i think all gq hinges get stiff and creaky..
my back door was the same, just keep doing what youv been doing in regards to spraying wd40 or any other lube and just keep opening and closing..more than just afew times too, try about 10 mins worth!
mine was that free afterwards that if the wind was baring blowing it would shut..!turned out to be abit of a pain, so i made up a pin to sit in the strap to stop it closing..lol
i tried leaving the strap out but my mates used to open the door and fling it round causing the door dint the rear panel  ..but at that stage the poor car had had its day body wise so it didnt bother me..

anyway just keep trying with the lube ;)
