3 Inch Body Lift - FJ60

Post by Coogee60 »

Hi all,
Just purchased a new 60 and am after some info on a 3 inch body lift. Did a two inch lift on my old truck a couple of years ago and remember everything went pretty smoothly. Plans are to go a little bigger with this one and want to start on the body lift. Anyone fill me in on any major differences the extra inch can cause? Lines? Steering? Thanks for the help.

Do a search mate. I think it was 'Dr Frankenstine' that did this a while back.

Was thinking 3'' because I would like to run 36's instead of the 35's on my last 60. Still tossing up the pro's and con's though.. I already have 2 1/2 in the suspension so what do you suggest for more lift? I would like to get in contact with someone who knows how to get good performance from leaf springs.

I'm not a BL fan .. my suggestion could be, pull out the BL and get a proper SO enought to run 36" with soft and nice flex .. ( flat springs .. )

Do a search mate. I posted some pics a couple of months ago of a 60 with a 4" Belton lift, 2" bodylift and 37" tyres.

what about using longer main leaves from say a 75? and giving them more lift? might work a bit better than lifting 60 springs too much?

That would work in the front fairly easily, but the rear would need some work. Belton make longer springs for a 4" lift would work out nicely. Apparently they are as flexy as leaves can be. Checkout Mouse's 60 on the 4wdmonthly forum.

4'' would be nice, has an OME setup thats only two years at the moment but I guess if I want to keep this suspension my options are fairly limited. I'll check it out.

body lift

Post by Cruza62 »

I imagine you want to go the extra inch so the tyres don't rub on the inner guard. The extra inch probably won't do much... Get reverse offset rims so the tyres are sitting further out, therefore when they do articulate they won't rub on the inner guard. I had this problem when I put extended shackles of the rear, I actually have that much travel that I get 31's rub on normal crap rims, so to fix it I got rockcrawler reverse offset rims from procomp for my 35's, and it works a treat.
62 was Petrol, now 12ht ! Body lift, lockers, spring lift, reverse offset rocrawler...? rims, NO RUST, some more stufffff....

Yes thats right, had a bit of rub on my old truck with 35mtr's, I know 36 tsl's or pedes are quite a bit bigger so will need the extra room. Anyone run these tyres with any of the above mentioned setups? May have to bite the bullet and go SOA.

Dont spring it over. Get some xtended shackles do the 2inch body, put the tyres on and see what u need to do. Whether you will need to move the diff forward an inch or cut the guards a little???
The money you will spend springing it over you can hav fr and rear lockers. Mate a swamper or pede not a real happy road tyre though!!!!!

why not SO .. ?

SO it's more flex .. more soft ( with flat springs ) nothing under the axles ( drag ) and no BL ..

Could be more work and involve a hi steering setup, and good work in Cut & turn .. but how much you gonna spend in a new spring set .. and BL .?

just my .000002 cents .. ;)

lift

Post by Cruza62 »

A spring over raises the centre of gravity of the car a lot more than a body lift does = easier to roll. Go the body lift, try and a cut the guards (not easy on a 60), get some extended shackles and then get some spaces/offset rims. You'll find your articulation on the rear (with extended shackles) will be insane !!

Spacers are on the cards. What needs to be done when installing extended shackles? Haven't used them before. Probably flick the swaybar too hey?

Make some up yourself, can give u the measurement if you want, alternativly bbm have em for round 90$pair. You will need longer shocks. I know of some cheap front long ones. DO NOT RUN SPACERS!!!!!!!
They are not for the road. Flip your rims. You can never put a price on safety.

lift

Post by Cruza62 »

I bought two inch lifted, uninvertable extended shackles off Superior Engineering.... I was a dicey on making em considering the load they are under. I think at the time they were $165 + postage. Haven't had a problem and the good thing is that you drill your own holes where the inversion stoppy thingy is supposed to go, therefore leaving the amount of travel and stuff up to your decision. Body lift = home made. Got some 65mm bar and lathed it. The springs I used on the rear are stock/out of the factory leafs and the front are just two inch lifted. It's kinda weird watching a leaf sprung car articulate so much.

Makes not difference how you raise it you are still raising the centre of gravity. Spring over rides better as mentioned as you can pull a leaf or two out. Tall shackles without a reversal on the front steer crap, they lean over under load making the steering non responsive. Its not so cheap to sprng over though if done right, need to cut up the front diff and get pinion angles right, and rotate the swivel housings to correct the caster or it will be a pig to drive. Bit of work involved.

SO of course raise your GC .. but I'm not Alonso or even Hamilton .. less with a more than 2 ton rig ..

I can drive my rig 120km/h nice .. you lear to drive it safety and with good brakes you know the limits of your car ..

I also run 2" spacers that mae me 4" wider track, in favor of my stability with any issu in more than 3 years ..
