What stops the steering on my 78 classic? Even with the stops wound all the way out they touch nothing! Is this normal? Does the box take the load on full lock?
Another prob is an annoying click / clunk (Sounds like a CV click) but only does it once then is quiet.(Have never heard a CV click only once before) Sound like noise comes from LF wheel area but only does it either under braking, turning or accelerating quickly so can't duplicate in driveway. Have checked all bushes and replaced most, calipers are tight, swivels are at correct pre-load, wheel bearings aren't sloppy, and tie rod ends seem OK. Have been chasing this prob for about 6 months and are ready to pull my hair out!!!!!
Any ideas, no matter how strange, would be most appreciated.
(Maybe LUCAS have a special relay that clicks to let you know either a) you are doing something stupid OR b) you still have electrics)

The stops normally do contact and limit the steering. The steering stop bolts normally hit the corner of the flange where the swivel housing bolts onto the axle housing. Is this where your stops are aiming to contact??
The click sounds like your radius arm bushes (the ones that attach the radius arm to the axle) are loose. Put a spanner on them and use your foot to do them up really tight. If they have been loose then they tend to flog out the hole and wear the bolt a bit so they can move around a fair bit and definately make a click when you jump on the brakes.

Yes the stops do aim to hit the housing but stop about 2mm short when the tie rod ends hit the brake calipers! The stop bolts are orig and at the end of the thread so I can't relaay screw them out any furthur WEIRD?

Thats sounds weird that the tie rod ends hit the calipers. I carnt imagine how thats happening. So the tie rod thats dehind the diff hit the calipers on full lock??

Sure do but only at one end of there travel (tie rod end) Hope I made sense put it up on stands and it does it on both sides. I checked my mates 84RR and all looks the same but it doesn't do that. I'll have to do some measuring. Perhaps the diff housing, swivel housing, tie rod ends or caliers are the wrong ones. Maybe the brackets for the steering are bent but I can't imagine it.

Yep they do touch on full lock. I got bored of looking at this prob and thought I'd check the water. Filler plug seized! Longer Spanner! Damn cracked top of tank! Looking for my solder now! You live and learn. Perhaps a bit of heat would have helped!!!!
