I was reading on I Zook . com about ,what they called a virtual lift on a Sierra.
This was a sort of how to artical on cutting your guards in a way that uses the inner guards as well as the outer to fill in the hole normally associated with a standard guard cut .
The method was said to be easy but didn't show full specs on doing front or all of the rear.
It consisted of cutting slits into your guard with a large angle grinder which would also cut the inner guard.Slits would be cut all the way round each guard.These flaps made by the cuts would then be bent in,first inner then outer over the top of the inner.
Fibre glass would then be used to cover all the booty fab,sanded and painted.
I was considering trying it but wasn't sure about a few things,has any one done it or seen it done,how do you do the sections that are the fire wall or the solid wall in the rear behind the seats..?
Or should i just use a bigger hammer.

My front clip was trimmed back with an air chisel - worked a treat...
Another option may be to fit some after market flares, or some home made rubber / plastic flares (depending on what you want to spend).
It should be possible to fit any of these flare options to the flat panels of the sierra so you theoretically should be able to cut as much as you want out of the guard / inner guard and still end up with covered tyres.
As the others said though - it depends on how stock you want the car to look.
On the other hand - if looks are more important than ability offroad you could always just increase the size of the bump stops - that would stop the tyres from coming up and touching the guards (though it would result in a less stable car i think)

it's not that hard but my job looks very rough without flares.
you get a much bigger wheel arch radius so you can fit massive tyres with no suspension lift.
remember, every inch of clearance you gain means you can go up 2 inches in tyre size.

i think the izook way was VERY dodgy......ive cut guards in many cars(not a 4x4 yet)....the easiest way is to cut out the lower lip of the inner guard first.........once done put a ruler on the flat of the wheel arch and butt it up against the outer guard....now with a marker move the ruler(whilst marking the guard)from end to end....this gives you the arch on you outer
guard....now measure 1cm down from that arch and mark it the same lenght of the top arch.....being only 1cm this allows you to fold this out or in (with pliers)to form a lip....(you should panel beat this as it will make it very neat)now measure from the inner guard to the outer guard and the lenght...cut a flat bit of panel steel and place it between the inner and outer guards(trim to suit)now spot weld it to both guards then use some sealer then some protectant.......job done.....looks neat and is strong......
