Best place to get a new starter motor?
Best place to get a new starter motor?
Hey guys,
I just went out to move the car and the starter motor on my TB42 maverick just made a grinding sound and now it only clicks when I turn the key.
I put in a 2nd hand one about a year ago and the teeth on the sprocket were pretty worn and I dont want to pay $200 for another 2nd handy in the same condition.
Can new ones be had from anywhere other than Nissan? I expect Nissan will charge an arm and a leg. What can I expect to pay from both Nissan and any other place that might supply them?
Thanks,
Dan

SWB mav. Some mods.
where are you located?
ur local auto sparky can easily overhaul it and if you remove and refit it will keep your costs down
or if you wanted to get a brand new 1 repco will be alot cheaper than nissan. or talk to your auto sparky as he can always supply you with one

Im in Bayswater, Vic.
Will an auto elec be able to replace the teeth that engage the flywheel? When I put the current one in I noticed they were fairly worn.
I have my old one lying in the shed that I would like to have rebuilt as a spare. I managed to get this one working again after some persuasion with a hammer.

My old man is in the same position as you with his starter motor on his TB42. The auto elec said that to rebuild the starter motor with a new cog would cost almost as much as a new starter motor itself.
Whether you would believe that is another story.
I think a new starter motor is around the high $200 mark. Could be wrong though

Found some info about these with a mate.
Apparently the N13 pulsar starter motor can be used with some modfications and they are alot cheaper.

yes, the part your refering to is called the 'drive'Will an auto elec be able to replace the teeth that engage the flywheel?
and they can usually be repaired but can always be replaced if they are too badly worn, cheaper than replacing the entire unit.

Log on to www.ingram.com.au They are auto elec suppliers and you can get pretty much anything from them. They have branches all over Aus,including Melbourne. You will need some info from the side of your starter motor (Brand and part number)and they should be able to supply the drive you are after. I would order new brushes at the same time and for about $10, any auto electrician will skim the armature for you at the same time. If you don't want to dismantle it yourself (it is relatively straight forward by the way), get the parts and take it all to an auto elecy for him to fit.
