Vitara 1.6 or 2.0 V6??

Hey guys im looking at buying a Vitara. But am just unsure what way i want to go.

I definatelly want a LWB. and i really do not want a Grand. So this leaves me with two options. 1.6ltr 4cyl, or the newer 2ltr V6.

Would some one please tell me the pro's and cons. And even the fuel consumption difference. Thanks alot guys.

Has any one got or had a 2ltr V6 model?

Cause i want to lift it 2" body and 2" suspension. Also after a Bull bar for it. Are these parts easilly purchased for this? Is it is wider than the 1.6ltr version.

I am by no means an expert but...

I believe the 2L has a wider track (Not sure what they did to widen it though).

I don't believe there is transfer case reduction gears available for the 2L (again I am not 100% sure) and I know it takes some major diff work to fit air-lockers. I have seen one really nicely done 2l/V6 (on the net) up in QLD but it sounded like he had to develop most of the mods himself ($$$).

I think you will find that modifying a 1.6 will be easier because many have been done before and most mods are readily available.

I hope this is a start for you. There are many others on here that would know plently more than me :)

Thanks very much mate, yer you have pritty much confirmed my suspicions. I drove a 2ltr today and was not impressed really of how it went. I think the 1.6 goes just as good, and it seems to want to rev more freely. There are not many of these around my area, i just found the 2 ltr so i thought i would check it out.

Any other comments more than welcome

Having had both, the suspension is the same but the chassis rails are further apart providing a wider track. The 2.0 has bigger brakes, a 70l fuel tank and more power plus cupholders :armsup: Air lockers fit as do t-case gears and suspension kits although Calmini's diff drop brackets at the front require mods. ARB's bars do not bolt on due to chassis differences. As long as the timing chain tensioner is fine and not noisy and the rear main seal is not leaking then it should be fine.

Thanks for that CJ, what about the petrol usage comparison? Are they basically the same?

Can the ARB's be modified to fit on, or what type of bar can you run on them?

I dont want anything too serious, just a bit of beach and bush work.
If the front diff brakes, (as prone too) can it be changed with the Grand Vitara still, or would i have to source a 2ltr V6 diff??

Are the parts interchangable between the 2ltr SWB and 2ltr LWB?

A little thirstier but not too bad. When the 1.6 was stock it was doing around the 10l/100km and the stock 2.0 was around 11l/100km

The bar could be adapted if you have some fabrication skills.

Yes, the GV steel diff swaps straight in.

Just general parts i guess. I have seen a few 2 doors with bull bars on them.

I'm not into serious 4x4, just want to lift it 2" body and 2" sus lift. With some 30" all terains...

I think which ever one is the correct price. The 2ltr one is 1997 so bit newer, and i like the interior better. Plus the air co works great. a lot of the 1.6 i have looked at have faulty air co's.

CJ is pretty lucky with his petrol consumptioon my V6 has been thirst even before I fiitted bigger tyres, East Coast Bullbars used to do the front bullbar if still available

What type of k's were you getting out of a tank? I had another drive of this V6 model, and it handles like crap. So i might just bite my time and get a 1.6.

The extra track width of the 2.0 will help the handling, not hurt it. If it handles like crap then a 1.6 won't be any better unless the suspension is stuffed on the 2.0 and then you might be able to use that fact to knock down the price a bit and fit an Old Man Emu kit which will gain you a bit of lift and improve the ride and handling at the same time which you say you want to do anyway.

I think the ECB bar is alloy.
