When they say montero, that's a Paj, right? I've got a Challenger, and they (the seppos) call that a Montero Sport, yeah?

So would this fit, you think???? Please...

It will probably only fit a 1983 - 1990 1st Gen Paj.

Depending on its size (8 or 9 inch) depends on what it'll fit. But being it sais it's for a L300 as well, chances are its the 8 inch.

9 inch for V6, 8 for the rest. If it is the 9 inch then it'll fit the rear of gen 2 's as well.

If it is the 8, it could be made to fit the front of a later model with a bit (plenty) of fiddling around.

I supposedly own the ONLY authentic Detroit locker in the world I bought it from Lloyd swartz who had it made custom for montero V6 front diff.
that one doesn't look like mine, who makes that one? My detroit came out of a '90 montero with the v6/bigger front diff, i put it into a '04 montero sport/challenger front diff and swapped thet into my '99 montero NL gls.
That is a good price if it is basically the same as the one i have now, i could get one of those for my other montero. can one of you guys post a link to a site that sells them so i can read more about them?

The one above is for a rear diff.

Yes but becasue it is a gen 1 8 inch doesn't that mean it'll fit in the front of a gen 2..... with a gen 1 front diff housing.

I don't think so - all the Paj front Detroits floating around Oz were custom made by Geelong Differentials. It's not that simple to find a front locker. Similarly, people were looking out for Starion rear LSDs to put in the front, because Paj rear LSDs wouldn't do the trick. I guess it's got something to do with the spline count?

Where the hell has Frank or JTop gone!

I have tried PM'ing Frank regarding low gears as i'm itching for them, he's got it but doesn't reply.....

Anyway - I have digressed...

I hear ya Scott, I seem to have confused myself.

You cannot get an 8 inch front 5.29.
Only 5.29 is 7.25 inch which no locker is available for
You can get an ARB for gen 1 rear diff which is 28 spline, 8 inch.

So.......
To get a locker in the front of a Gen 2 and keep 5.29's you get an 8 inch low pinion front from a V6 Gen 1 which the 8 inch rear from the gen 1 will fit into then get the rear ARB (RD05) and put it in the front.....

Following...? :D I am slowly deconfusing myself

Or I could be miles away.

I'm not trying to sound special i was just curious because the story on my Detroit is that Lloyd Swartz had it made custom made for his '90 V6 SWB
montero (with a front axle = 28 spline, 29mm diameter, diff = 8" diameter) and he paid the developing costs, and after that even with him trying to get others interested nobody bought any and they were discontinued. I like that there is more out there i'm just trying to figure out where they're coming from and who makes them now.

Yeah Lloyd can indeed claim he had the first Pajero Detroit in the US but certainly not in the world.
There were Paj's running around here with Detroits 10 years before Lloyd had his made.
Locked Drive Systems here in Sydney used to make versions for early Paj's (8" rear) then stopped due to lack of sales. Sometime in the mid 90's they did a batch (about 20) of 8" front lockers for the Queensland Mitsi Club.
Geelong Diffs here in Melbourne purchased a manufacturing licence for the Detroits and has done quite a few over the years for Pajero's (fronts & rears) including my original front Detrot that Noisey has now.
I actually got Lloyd a set of new side gears from Geelong Diffs after he stripped one.
Lloyd actually had his Detroit made by Locked Drive Systems and this was well after they did the batch for the Mitsi Club but by that time they had either lost or thrown out original tooling/drawings etc that's why it cost him a lot as there were almost starting from scratch.

Also just to clarify about the rear 8" diff being retrofitted into the front of a V6 - it can be done but it's a massive amount of work.
Remember a 8" rear has 30.5mm diameter splined side gears the 8" front is 28.5mm so you will either need custom inner CV's or side gears to match.
Even though the C&P's are identical the diff centres are not.
The rear 8" will physically bolt into the front V6 housing but it will protrude about 1" past the housing so you will need to make up a custom front cover.
ARB did look at this and decided it was easier to start a front 8" locker from scratch.
The Starion conversion is different as the centres are identical dimensionally so it makes it a bolt in job and the side gears are 28.5mm.

Frank, thats exactly what i wanted to figure out thanks. I probably could have just called Lloyd and asked him about the locker i bought, but for some reason i felt like doing my own research :D
so no company makes them anymore and if i break this one or want another for another truck i'll just buy an ARB

Geelong Diffs still make them as they do a lot of Detroits for drag cars and carry a big list of spares.
When he built mine about 4 years ago he told me he had done about 50 Pajero Detroits (mixture of front & rear).
However they are very slow to deal with.
I'd be EXTREMELY surprised if you grenaded the Detroit a CV or C&P will go well before that. Lloyd's problem was that the original side gear splined dimension was slightly too large so the CV wasn't a snug fit so after a few years of very hard abuse the right hand side gear was stripped (he also lost a few inner CV's with stripped splines).
The new side gears from Geelong Diffs were a nice snug fit (I tested them both on a CV before I shipped them).
But my advice would be to go ARB it would be cheaper to buy one new in the US than it would to get a another custom Detroit made and you will be waiting months for it.
