dual calipers on the rear of a patrol diff

Post by professor »

I have finally had enough of breaking the hilux rear diff so I'v got ahold of a gq rear diff (yes yes toyota with nissan gear!)

the diff is made up of the High pinion front center with the spline count for the rear axels, arb locker chrio treated 4.88 gear set and a standard set of brakes.

I have the abillity to disconnect the rear drive and front dig but I have found with my current setup in braking the rear tyres is very delayed and time consuming.

I now have a set of subaru calipers for the 18mm disk and 2 clutch boosters( for cutting brakes). the subaru calipers have the handbrake setup on them which is great for the hilux handbrake and having the extra port i can now run the 2 clutch boosters to run the cutting brakes. there is a problem though, its hard to mount the extra caliper off the diff. Does anyone make or have made a braket to suit the same as what i'm trying to do? I want to retain the original brakes and have them working as they should.

It sounds like you will have to make up a custom bracket and weld it on, then post pictures so the rest of us see what you're up to because you are doing things way beyond the majority here will ever dream about. :D I am assuming that no-one else has tried this before, but would think there would be a few of the big brains that get on here that could help, I'm just not one of them. Here are my thoughts though:

If you run rims with more offset will it make it easier to fit the extra calipers?

Maybe you can move the lower control arm mounts in towards the centre to make room to fit the calipers on the front of the housing?

Can you replace the original calipers with the subaru ones and run a break set up similar to offroad racing buggies. They manage to run a foot break and individual cutting brakes. Can't help you on how this works though.

On a different note. Do you know if the treated crownwheel will definitely hold up to running backwards or is this a gamble? And, why not fit/modify a front diff so you can have rear steer? It's got everything else, would be a shame not to have every gadget possible fitted to the lux.
What's the difference between ignorance and apathy? I don't know and I don't care.

Chad although you may find the nissan diff will be stronger you will also find unless you can buy the part off the shelf and bolt it straight on then your going to have to make it yourself. Its not very often in the Nissan community you get people thinking outside the box their parts came in from arb/tjm/wizard/dobbinson/snake etc.

This is out of my league but why not run 4 pot callipers on the rear ?

These brake upgrades should help with the delayed braking and should hold it better but are dear.

The problem with it is it will involve modifying your standard brake lines etc.

Is there a reason you want to keep the standard brakes ?

Original brakes for normal running, extra brakes for cutting brakes.

Wow sorry for the delay I thought this thread was on page 4 by now.

I figured that not many have done this mod but you never know.

having the extra caliper seperates the use of the brakes I want the foot brake to stop the car at any time and the cutting brakes for just that.(cutting brakes on the rear only)

The extra caliper will fit, just as i said the bracket will be a pain to get right but when i do there will be a drawing made up for the lazer cutters for future use.

the strenght in the rear with the high pinion is a worry but i have one of the best diff guru's on the job (JMac) he has done a few now and one is running on a winch car and runs as a daily driver. I guess all i can do is try it what can happen i break it!

as for rear steer i'm over it ----- sort of----- its hard to get a shop to work on it! I'm still entertaining the idea of the 80 hubs/swivels on the nissan diff but as i said i'm over breaking stuff and the hilux is very manoverable as it is.

back to the cutting brakes i figured that after 10 hours of front digs last weekend and nearly a new set of tyres gone, all i want out of the rear cutting brakes is for them to just lock up and stop the rear wheels from turning, I dont want to be hanging off a lever, I just want to push a button and start the front dig. the clutch master boosters will have an air rams actuating the brake via an air locker solinoid. I'm doing it this way because its cheep( thanks K&A) for parts and as i said i dont want to be swinging of a lever.

there will be some pics on the way.

Draw up one bracket to take both calipers. You'll want to rotate the standard caliper up at least 30-40° as the lower slide pin gets mangled by rocks in the standard position. It'll defeat the purpose of running both calipers if one set isn't working.
More people should do this, but I guess it needs to come in kit form in an arb/tjm/wizard/dobbinson/snake box. :finger:

yeah i thought of the rock problem but i'v gone for just an extra bracket and its at the lazer cutters as we speak.

i'm hoping to shave the diff too for more clearance.

I'v got it all sorted the brakets worked a treat but I had to grind a mm of the caliper so as to clear the rim.

I have the braket on file now so if anyone was thinking of doing this to the nissan diff just let me know!

Why couldn't you just use extra patrol calipers ?

Cost factor or is there a reason they dont fit ?

I needed the hand brake on the subaru caliper as the hilux doesn't have a transfer hand brake. I looked at doing the transfer handbrake but they are all crap and besides i have the disconnect dog there in the way.

Hey

Like the dual setup very trick
Just a Q...
If u didnt already have the rear disco would you have gone to the trouble?

Also how is it gunna be setup in the car?
Another pedal? or i seen a setup on A1's Vit that i thought was a good idea, 3rd pic down...

Hey justin with the second caliper, if there was no disconnect i would have just ditched the gq cal and put the sooby cal in just for the handbrake setup.

the in cab setup will be 1 button on the joy stick running an air solinoid running a ram onto a clutch master cylinder through to the sooby caliper X 2 I already have the vits setup and its not enough to lock up the hilux drums.

got the dual calipers running as well as the nissan diff i just need to refine the booster when the lazer cutters come back from hols.

I stated in the members section that I will do these as a kit if they are cost effective
