4runner starting problems

Post by revin »

My brother-in-law has a 4 runner V6 (unsure of year)

His problem isnt all the time happened probally twice in as many months but basically the car will wind over but wont start. No matter what, not even jump starting.Only will start from towing/pushing even then only have to move like 3 feet and it`ll start :bad-words:

we have checked:
Battery:is fine has like 13.6V also done a hyro check all OK.

Last time we pulled a plug lead off and wound over engine and did notice it only threw 1 spark and then nothing. Also pulled coil lead off and same thing happened.

Thats when we tow started it and it started.

I have also put it in gear and rocked the car but this made no diffrence.

im swayed towards a crook coil, but do any of you guys have anything else I should check or is their a way to check the coil

Cheers

could be a pickup in the dizzy (crank sensor), because these are reluctor type, the faster they spin the more output they have, if the output falls to low the ECU won't see it.

check that the airgaps are all good for a start

Have you tried swapping-in the battery from the tow car yet?

i'm not 100% sure with the 4 runner, but other toyota stuff inside the dizzy there is a wheel with teeth on it (like a gear), and a sensor (will have 2 wires coming off it and has a steel bar out the front sitting near the wheel. there should be a very small airgap between the 2. make sure the sensor hasn't come loose causing a large air gap.

whilr you are in the dizzy check that all the contact points aren't to worn in the cap and rotor.
