SWB patrol auto optinions??

Post by grepin »

First of all this is my first post.
I am here as I will be getting a 4WD to be stored at a sea shack for boat launching a little towing and beach work. I am after the cheapest reliable option. A few niceties like power steering and aircon to keep the missus happy also required.

Anyway I have came across one here in Adelaide. Its a SWB 89 Patrol Auto 4.2lt dual fuel. It has done 300000km but the head and trans have been reconditioned.

First question is that I do like the idea of auto due to being lazy and good for boat ramps. Are they OK for off road work.

Secondly I am not that worried about economy and although the gas is good does it detract from the overall tune. For example I will not be able to always get LPG and would need both fuels to be tuned well.

I am keen on the SWB base vehicles is there any reason I should look at LWB vehicles.

Thanks

Down the track I may go a slight lift and a couple of mods if it will be warranted.

If thats all you want, find the cheapest hunk of shit you can, $2000.. GOw with a G60 or MQ.. having grown up on the water front, cars dont last at all with salt air. HOw big is the boat?

autos are fine offroad, infact, on beaches usually better.

no. SWB will do fine.

The current boat is only 900kg on trailer but am going bigger.
I see your point lift for ramps could be an issue. I will be doing a little bush bashing etc so I guess I ment if it needs a little sus work or whatever to make it more capable then maybe.
The SWB Patrol is around $4k and getting a non rust but little scratched body 4.2L on gas with reco head and trans.

The other option atmo is a H60 4.2L diesel roughy with rust spots and 400000km but seems to run fine after short drive. The owner says it hasnt given him any problems after 5yrs owning and he has kept regular oil changes up tp it. The aircon works apparently but the switch jsut died. Its around the 2-2.5K$ mark 6 months reg.

I do like the Patrol look however.

Autos are better for offroad driving if your gearing is right.
