40 series 60# steering upgrade Q

Post by shorty_f0rty »

Hey guys,

I just wanted to get your thoughts on something. I am planning on upgrading my 40 power steering to 60 power steer.. primarily due to stronger steering rods and removing the drag link running by the shock tower..

Now I have managed to pick up a steering box from a xJ61 cruiser.. I am aware the bolt patterns are slightly different between 60, 61 and 62 steering boxes..

the question is.. how much of an issue will this be in the long run? I only plan to run 33's in the immediate future going up to a max of 35's when the budget allows.. the box looks to be in pretty good nick too.. i have the 61 box now and got it at the right price (cheap!!)..

I have enquired with a few wreckers and they dont "trade" parts. a 60 box will cost about $250 and the only reason I can figure that the 61 box isn't good is the availability of parts should it need to be replaced in the future

do you guys think its a big issue? how many have had a 60 box fail and required a replacement?

any opinions would be appreciated..

Thanks,

Andrew

Hey Benny.. thats what im thinking.. just wondering if there was something else I should be aware of before committing.. i dont want my chassis rail to be more swiss cheese than it has to be.

they're the same internals, so if it craps itself a rebuild won't be hard to get parts for, basically only the outer casing would be harder to replace. run it. (have you compared it to a 62 box to make sure they were a different bolt pattern again?)

Nope.. can't say I have.. I'm just going on what Scotto has said re: the 60 vs 61 so its just an assumption.. also did you have any luck with a 55 shaft Ads?

Thanks bubs but I would be spending twices as much if i bought that 60 box..

by all accounts i'll run with what I've got..

thanks fellas!
