Engine mods - more power

Post by Goutman »

Gday guys just wondering what people have done to gain more power out of there rover motors. What mods to what gain. I currently have a 3.9 block, 3.5 heads stage 3 wade cam extractors an 2.5" exhaust. After driving a mates GU ute turbo diesel with 100 rwkw on 36's got me thinking the rangie needs more power :D

Is it geared appropriately for the tyre size you're running?

Stage 3 cam. Where does it make its maximum torque??

I imagine if its in the upper rev range your car isnt reving hard enough to get to the torque band

If this is the case either change cam, diff ratios or drive it harder!

I had a 4.6 with a cam in it and it was the biggest mistake I made . I had to rev s*%t out of it to keep it in its torque band. Not the best thing when trying to crawl a hill in low range 1st gear

Very good question, and could make a massive difference.

But with what you've currently got, the 3 options most likely to give a noticeable power gain while staying rover would be:

1. Aftermarket ecu, if you don't already have one and are already EFI, or if you're on carbies, convert to EFI.
2. Boost - turbo or supercharge.
3. 4.6/4.4 or stroker.

Failing that, find something big and drop it in the front. I reckon a 454 big block should do nicely :P

I've got a 3.9 with less than 50k on it, still in car, must have had some work done, bit of a rocket, can test drive, with twin carbs

Or a crate 350 done less than 20k  with 425 gas carb comes with adaptor for either 4 or 5 speed, both fan to clutch, 1200 beer tickets for either :D

As the others have said:

4.6 short motor is probably the cheapest and easiest way to get more power. Maybe I should buy that stroker motor then you can buy my 4.6. :D

Shouldn't be too expensice to supercharge either.

But most importantly, are you running 4.11's?
Thanks,

Adam

Tipping with GQ diff's they'll atleast be 3.9:1, most likely 4.11:1 or even maybe 4.3 or 4.6

$16,000!!! my mechanic rebuilds n strokes 3.9's to 5L for around the $5k mark, he supplies the motor (i think) he mainly uses them in racing TR7's. $16,000 that must be one hella of a donk!!

Engine mods - more power

a bit off topic but 4.11 gears are good but .cost a lot to set up as you need to set pinion height 4+ hours labour. Are not interchangeable with 90% off rover owners who may offer to lend you a diff centre half way through a comp( thats me ) .If you break a gear set you always need to buy a brand new set and go through the process of seting pinion height and pattern , but with 3.54 you could get a centre out of any rangie pull the actual centre out , pulloff the crown wheel put it on your locker set it up in the feild with a dial indicator and be on your way in 2 hours.
I have had 4.11,s for 3 years and after my last breakage am going back
to3.54,s.
High range gears dont break, make the car responsive and rovers have
better than average low reduction.
EFI makes abig difference, forced induction on a 2 bolt mains bearing block may be asking for trouble but some will prove me wrong.
Check your high range gearing as there are a lot of different ratios for both lt95,s and lt230,s for vehicles with 29" tyres to 32" tyres
cheers
