Okay here goes was reading the threads below on the EL/EF alternator upgrade.

Wiring
http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/phpBB2/vi ... p?t=116388

Can I run this without a upgrade
http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/phpBB2/vi ... p?t=129343

And a brief story, Last outing brake pads fell out and on the way home in some rough tracks, the brake light come on and charge light, I thought yep I l lost a pad and so all the fluid has gone to one piston. Stopped found the where the missing pad was and made my way home using as minimal brake as possible. Parked it up and waited four days for some new brake pads to come to swap over, I did the front and the back. Anyway its all fixed go to have a drive and the car wont start find the battery is at 4volts so I charge it up start the car and got for a drive lights stay on. Okay well I have new fluid and its at maximum so the light should be off....? Anyway get home check for charge at the battery nothing, check at the Alternator nothing, run checks on all the wires coming from the plug yep I have 12volts. So Alternator must be dead. So did one last test to see if it would run without the battery and the 4by died and have done the tests with both car running and with just ignition on. I have also checked all connections and they seem good. So in the stage of my brake pads falling out my alternator died as well and I didn't realise it. Im told that both lights will come on when one of these fails some times by a electrician. So anyway now I have to wait for Ashdown ingram to send it away and be tested as its under warranty and it could take a month or so...? I didn't want to get another one from them for the time being cos first I don't really have the money and I don't want to be tied down to a company that cant offer warranty support from their shop or locally again with another Alternator if it dies down the track again.

So while Im waiting Im looking at doing the EF/EL upgrade, when I get my warranty claim I will just get the money back instead.

Questions

Now is this basically a strait swap over apart from sorting the wiring out...?

My sierra does not run the V-groove it runs a multi groove like the serpentine belts i think. Running from the water pump and main crank

Is it possible that I might not even have to change the pulley..?

The old alternators part No. was 03-71426 a rebuilt re manufactured style one.

Any way any help would be awesome and if I have missed any links to the Ford EF/EL swap could some one post it in thanks.

The main link you're after with the EF/EL upgrade is this one:

Credit to built4thrashing for that one

Will check pulley on std EF/EL alternator for you as I picked up an EL 110A alternator from a wrecker this morning. Will grab it out the car and get back to ya, if someone doesn't post up earlier.

MUD-PIGSIERRA -

Are those pulley's on your Suzi original or have they been changed at some stage?

I did the EL alternator upgrade a couple of years ago now, and the one problem I had was I couldn't make my single Vee belts last too long. A multi vee would have been the ticket.

What model suzuki is yours?

I fitted an EF alt to mine with a single V-belt but I have heard of others using the (EF) multi rib pulley in combination with the Suzi multi rib pulleys.
I have no dramas whatsoever with the single V-belt and apart from usual retension after 300km it has been fine for about 7 months now. No slippage. No chewing or throwing belts just lots of power

Fitting is Easy. Drill out the hole and captive nut in the mount and grind about 1.5mm off the captive nut in the alt. Use the EF bolt. The original Suzi tensioner arm will bolt up too.
I upgraded the power cable to the battery too.

Im not sure of the the pulleys being original or not...? Its 92 model running gear, though my Sierra is a 84 body and chassis. I do have power steering I think my pulleys being different may have something to do with that...?

Thanks for the help so far guys I will hit up a local wrecker see what they have, at first I was under the impression EF/EL alternators were dirt cheap as rebuilt units calling around today a re-co one was $395 :? daaamnn

I got mine brand new off Ebay for $50 plus delivery.
Don't be frightened of buying a secondhand one as they last for ages and ARE cheap if you look around.
I asked my local auto electrician how many he'd had to repair and all he talked about was EA. He couldn't remember fixing an EF unit. I thought that was a good indication that they'll last longer than the rest of the car..

*** I believe the Suzi multi rib has one or two less ribs than the EF pulley. So as long as you line it up, it should work.***

Yup want33s is right ... EF/EL alt has more ribs than on your zook, but may well work. If not then it's just a matter of finding a wrecker / auto elec who keeps a parts bin of old pulleys. Some do, some don't.

Brand new $50 :bad-words: I paid $60 at a wreckers!

Mine has multi v belts, its a swift/barina donk..kept the pulleys as better for power steer, and now better for the ef alternator.
No probs with mine yet.

Just a update for those with Power steering or if there is any guys on here that have done this any help would be good.....?

But basically fitting the EL-EF falcon Alternator is not a exact fit if you have powers steering, I don't have enough space between the top of the motor where the thermostat sits and the steering shaft to swing the alternator to get enough tension on the belt. Im now adding on a slight lift on the bracket to get the required space for the alternator to fit in. Pics will be up once its done

If anyone wants to swap a single rib EA alternator pulley (its a large diameter pulley so works great in high revving suzuki, i put it on as belt slip was a problem with standard pulley, but fixed it nice with larger pulley), for a multirib pulley id be happy to swap, as im transferring alternator from G13A to G16B.

Mudpig I just got a second hand EL 100amp alternator today from the wreckers for 60 bucks to replace my current one which I think the regulator has blown. From what I"ve heard I can get my stuffed one recoed for about 120 down here in melbs. I'd be more than happy to send you this second hand one or pick up another for you and post/courier or maybe one of the guys from brizzy being a bit closer. don't know how available parts are up in darwin but this could be an option. also look at some bosch alternators with similar mounting configurations as you will be able to keep a spare set of brushes and stuff with you and get parts easily from auto elecs or auto parts suppliers.

http://apps.bosch.com.au/products/saa/a ... arters.pdf - some light reading about alternators and starter motors .

EL ford bosch replacement alternator part number: BXF1260 - go check out what this is worth and it may be better to get this and a spare regulator (which are external i think), brushes and a couple of other user serviceable bits to keep you out on the trail...just an idea. As I have no idea how remote or how hard parts are for you to get up there.... :D :D :D

Just a few updates for those that have power steering that might be looking at the 100amp Ford Alternator.... :?

Because there was not enough room for the Alternator to swing in any direction to give the belt tension I decided as I had purchased the Alternator I would do a add on to the bracket. The bracket is a 100mm box 65x65 chopped in half to make a triangle as such and has been welded on to the old bracket to give me extra height and a slight angle away from the engine block. I picked up a 4PK925 belt and it slipped over and gives me tension as well as clearing both the engine and the steering rack.

Old and new obviously the bigger being a bit harder to fit
Image

Tacked on to check it will work its now getting welded. just need to sort the top slider bracket out now.

Paint and fully welded now, the fit is good and I'm just sorting out my tensioner on the top.
