80 series CV replacement
Has anyone done a CV replacement on their 80 series? Got it all apart but appears there is a piece missing or was never in there.
The Gregory's manual says to install inner and outer spring clips on the inner shaft and put into the CV but the how to that is linked off the ih8mud site seems to show that one is a wire based clip and the other is a metal based clip that is a bit thicker.
I'll post pics up later, about to have dinner with the family, but if anyone knows if there is meant to be one or 2 retainers and what style it would be good....

Yep there's a pretty beefy circlip kind of ring on the inside of the axle (i.e. outside the CV bell), and the 'spring clip' on the outer end of the axle. This smaller clip will spring into its groove as you push the axle into the CV, then expand when properly seated, making the CV and axle impossible to separate without a fair whack of the mallet.

Your right. There is also a beefy c-clip on the CV shaft, in the hub. But as per the picture, you have two clips ont he end of the axel shaft. The smaller one usually breaks when you seperate the axle from the birf (in my experience )jsttry wrote:You mean like this? sping clip goes on end that goes into CV, and the beefier clip goes in the next groove, making it sit just outside the CV cup.
I could have swarn that beefy clip actually came from the outer shaft of the CV or am I getting forgetful?

What model 80 does the longfields CV's fit
As I would like to put them in mine
I've got a 93 model with no abs but needs 16" rims

No worries mate! Glad to be of assistance!jsttry wrote:thank you very much CV1, great to have a chat! Also went into my local Don Kyatt to get a replacement hub washer and they too said the 80 series only has one clip on the inner axle shaft.
Also to answer dogbreaths question, yes they are different.
The 78 79 80 & 100 series axles have a raised shoulder at the base of the spline to stop the cv going on to far. ( as per above picture shown ).
All the other solid front Toyota's have a thick square section stop ring as you are referring to.
Cheers!

Not sure Dan, thought of getting longfields but needed to get back on the road and thought $75 for new ones wasn't too bad considering second hand Suzuki ones are over $110 up here in DarwinMUD000 wrote:Sorry for hijacking

As far as I'm aware only thing the 16" rims is needed is because of the different size brakes, irrelevent to the CV however there does appears to be different parts for CV's pre and post 92

You can run late model front brakes on 15 inch rims, its when you try to run the larger late model rear bakes that you have problems with clearance.
You can run short or long c/v;s in any 80, the drive plates are different lengths for the constants, so a long drive plate is used with a long c/v....the short ones are for early constants and all dx part timers.

Models with ABS will have different CVs. The CV is fitted with a part for the speed sensor. Post 94 models had longer splines on CVs and longer drive flanges on the hubs.jsttry wrote: there does appears to be different parts for CV's pre and post 92
