Weird noise from Diff/Shaft..... HELP
So my Lux was making a lovely dink dink dink sound when moving under load in 1st gear.
Did not happen in any other gear, or when moving just 1st when taking off from the lights or similar for 4 or 5 seconds...
It sounded like the centre bearing had gone, and after replacing the bearing (just then) the sound is still there. Its a metallic dink noise that gets louder and quicker as I acclerate. I can't think where it is comming from? The diff is working fine, everything is working fine and now the centre bearing is replaced I have no idea of where it is from.
I took the rear drive shaft off at the diff end and raised a wheel and spun it. It spins fine and the diff feels smooth. The play in the diff does seem a little large but I am not sure what it was before this.
Any thoughts on what it is, or how to isolate the problem?

Crap.
Even with broken teeth the diff would run smooth?

Ok, just pulled the diff and its fine. Teeth are perfect and looks great.
So it doesnt seem to be the diff. All the unis move free and one is quite new.
All I can think of now is maybe a rear axle bearing or similar? There isnt really anything else back there?
It has me stumped...
Just for clarity, the noise is a dink dink dink noise. Not deep sounding and not continuous. Sounds more like a rattle if that makes sense.

It definately on the drive train. Its not a rattle like a muffler etc. Its metalic, it sounds just like a clapped out center bearing thats running on the metal after the rubber has gone.

So how do I pick a bad uni.
I have had ones that are stuffed before, ie wont move, but mine all seem ok, could one be too loose?

How do you know its coming from the rear???
Pull the rear shaft and and drive it on the front shaft, see if it still makes the noise!!!
Could be Uni, Slip yoke First gear could be screwed!
If you pull the rear shaft out and the noise is still there, then pull the front out and drive just on the rear!
If the noise is there both times then its something in the gearbox or t/case!
Drop the oil from the t/case and then the gearbox, see if there is any metal!!!

why pull the front shaft out? and not just put it in 2 wheel drive?
nothing upfront should spin in 2wd should it?

Yep Good point!
Didn't even think of that!
So how did you go TONKA????
Not sure.
Put everything back together (the diff got some new oil and a check so it wasn't a complete waste of time) and noticed the Spring U bolts were loose. Tightened them all up and tested the car again and the noise was not was bad. Re greased all the unis at the same time and the noise has gone almost completely. Needed the car so didnt bother testing shafts etc, I just needed to drive the thing as its the DD.
Anway I got someone else to drive it while I was behind it and noticed that I have a fair bit of axle wrap from running flat soft springs with open clamps. So much so that the diff is getting a fair bit of angle that in turn is putting the driveline on a funky angle which is what is causing the sound (still not sure whats making it exactly)
So I reckon to stop the sound, I need to stop the diff pointing skyward when I acclerate. Track Bar?
