Loss of turning circle

Post by Guy From Nowhere »

Hey guys,

recently got a GQ with a bit of a leaky PS pump. When I first got it it had the normal GQ turning circle, but was able to reverse park it alrightly. Now after a weekend out 4WDing I am struggling to get the same lock as I had before.

For some reason I have about 80% of the full lock I had previous to 4WDing. This happens in 2 and 4WD and on both sides. Nothing looks bent underneath; although, the return to centre damper has a ding.

any ideas (have done a search and closest I could find is below)

Cheers

Hubs were still locked in. I am going to take the dampner off and also jack the front up and observe the opperation and fluid loss of the power steer under minimal load.

The main issue is everything looks kind of ok.

sounds like CV to me, my powersteer pressure line was rooted which meant teering would get 80% round then id have to push it a bit and it would go the rest of the way round. the pressure line also made it wander strangely with the locker in. so check the pump or the lines (mine was just blistered but it leaked out aswell.
turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown

Are you sure you've lost lock both ways??
Is your steering wheel off centre??
GQ's are notorious for twisting sector shafts in steering boxes which will cause you to lose lock.
If you look at the steering box where the sector shaft comes out the bottom of the box you can see some splines. They should be perfectly straight lines. You'll notice if they have a curve or twist in them.
