Looking to buy a 2004 D22.. found a potential target..

Post by strafe »

G'day

After the missus '95 Vitara GLX managed to crack the engine block after 280,000k's, we're looking for an upgrade.

Tossing up either a Patrol or a Navara, however the patrol we won't be able to fit in the garage. Missus is concerned about parking either of them and blind spots.

Anyway, found this 04 Navara D22 STR at a local dealer in Perth. Asking $31,990 @ 90,000k's, previous owner in his 50's upgraded to a new Patrol. Talking to the dealer he said the owner was in a local 4x4 club and worked for ARB, explaining the huge amount of accessories, however bought a patrol and moved back to eastern states.

From what I know so far:
- had airlockers but the compressor/tank has been removed
- had dual battery but 2nd battery removed
- roof mount console, minus UHF
- aftermarket suspension
- swing away tyre and jerry carriers are a bonus, room for long range tank
- has a winch in front but the cable looks salty from what i can tell

From the pics, anyone seen this out and about or know anything more about it?

Is $31,990 too high a price? Could probably get them to take 2-3k off due to some body damage..

It is mostly to be used as a daily driver, with 3-4 (hopefully more) away trips a year, as well as lugging trailers and stuff in the tray.. no comps or torture tests.. only the usual coastal environment on the way to camp sites.

Haven't taken it for a test yet and haven't inspected it other than peering in the windows and a quick look underneath..

Thoughts?

Cheers
Steve

Just me or the tires look little low in the center for tread??? I'd go speak to the bloke who owned it, ask what club... Ask him its history...

if it was damaged or dinted, yes, ask for it to be fixed or many thousands off. Have you checked underneath the car for damage?

winch cable looks salty?? Salt water/etc = rust...

www.redbook.com.au for a ballpark price.

wat are they worth new?

I believe I saw that Navara at a Midland caryard in December, wasn't ready for sale and was very dirty. Might be some ammo when you are bargaining...
Seems good value considering the extras but it looks like it has been well used.

Couple of interesting points for you..

The club sticker is on the back.

I didn't think you can get a locker for the deisel Navara
maybe the diff centres are changed ???
If the locker is in there you are doing well

That silver panel around the stereo that has screw holes everywhere is about $450 odd to replace.. Id either bargin down or get them to relace it if its at a nissan yard.

looks like it may have had a lift.... the front lower arms seem to be on more of an angle than mine

It may have a long ranger in it.. i missed one that did cause i didnt pay attention to the big box under there..... oops.

Good range of accesories..... lot of dollars to kit one out like that..
Ive ony got halfway there.

that's how mine wants be when it grows up!! hehe

Looks a bit exxy to me. I have been looking at Navaras also and just saw one advertised in brisbane that i'm interested in. 06 model 30 something on the clock and asking 32 grand. No accessories except a tub liner and a hard cover back but still under warranty and in basically showroom condition. All those accesories would be worth a lot but by the looks of it someone has driven it pretty hard.

Driven lots and driven hard are two different things. I'd contact the 4WD club and see if you can find the old owner and chat to them. They should tell you the truth as they don't own it anymore. Stone flecking and scratches are OK underneath. If there are guages and dents on the diff pumkin ( I know its IFS ) or the chassis then ask questions. Look under the body and tray to see if there are any repairs to the body work. Also check for the air line in/outlet ( not the breather hose) for the diff locks. Don't worry about the body for rust. Check the chassis rails and cross tubes. Look where its hard for them to quickly respray for detailling. Those K's are average for a daily driver and are fairly good for a touring vehicle. OH and check the shock mounts top and bottom for cracking. If all is OK then offer them 28-29k or walk away. ;)

I have to point out, you could haggle a dealer to drive away in these things brand new for $33,000 in 06.

Even considering the mods, its not worth what theyre asking (imo).
