If i could find a low k 3.8ltr petrol engine does anybody think this would be a easy bolt in & wire up plus much of a power up grade i know the kw`s are not that much more any thoughts !

Technically, it shouldn't be too hard - you have a manual gearbox?
From having VR/VS/VT Commodore company cars, they're not really a revvy motor. They may spin to their redline (5500?) but the don't have much power up there - their real strength is their midrange torque (which the auto trans wasn't calibrated to work with. )
Positives: common engine, well known & undersood, ready availability of parts (service & repair), should be simpler to have repaired in a remote location.
Negatives: all the hassles of a conversion for what may be a backwards performance step - due to the different characteristics.
You're determined to stick with petrol? Not interested in a DiD conversion?

well if it has the same block is it just crank& rods or how over can the bore go could we go 4ltr !!!! what i really would like is a little more kw & torque and i hear you all say 3.2did i drive one everyday power & torque great but their ecu problems with fuel worry me ( ping & rattles ) but thats another story

Good point, mine is almost at 280,000 and is showing a distinct lack of power. I am sure there must be some better options other than spending all that cash just to get the same power back, not sure about the ford 5.0 options.TREVORC wrote:yes i agree but not on a engine with 245,000 km so if i have to freshin it up why not see what options

The 3.5L is a 6g74 and the 3.8L is a 6g75, this denotes different engine blocks. As for physical size differences I am not sure, but I know that the 6g74 3.5L is a wider block than the 6g72 3.0L, and it would be fair to assume the 6g75 3.8L is different again.
I have driven NL 3.5's and the NP 3.8's, and the NL's with their DOHC seem to have kicked ass power and performance wise over the NP's larger capacity but SOHC engines. The DOHC 6g74 comes in at 153kw while the SOHC 6g75's that I drove came in at 150kw. I understand that of late mitsubishi have upped the anti with the 3.8's power output, but you would probably find it uneconomical to use one of these engines.
The DOHC 3.5L 6g74 happens to be my favourite of the bunch, a very free revving engine that never seems to be lacking.

The latest 3.8 is rated at 184kw & 329nm. bore is 95mm, stroke 90mm
Original 3.8 is rated at 150kw & 314nm
NL 3.5 is rated at 140kw & 303nm, bore is 93mm, stroke 85.8
Had a look in Haynes manual, but it doesnt list a max overbore size. Im sure mitsi would know the max limit.
I would be very suprised if they cast a totally new block for the 3.8, but you never know(i guess it was also used in the 380, so maybe they did?)
Why not freshen up the 3.5 and keep the compression low, then you can bolt on twin turbo's

now neil this is my week end going away machine !!!!! i just like to hook up the camper so my memory is fading i just would like alittle more torque the fuel doesnt bother me for how much i use it may be a freshen up & get a cam shaft expert involved that may help
