86-87 hilux steering assy.

86-87 hilux steering assy.
Howdy guy's.
Iv got a set of hilux diffs/axels from the wreckers that im totaly rebuilding for my zook (comon dont hold it against me). im in the process of TRYing to pull off the steering arms from both hub assy. (i dont know the names for everything so if you can give me names that would be top's)
Now im trying to pull steering arm "A" up and off of hub assy "B" now that iv removed all the nuts. i used a soft faced hammer the other night with a "moderate" amount of force on the steering arm to no avail. was even contemplating using item "C" and a lighter in the end.
once i had a closer look there seemed to be some clips at the start of each studs threads:
Now are these holding it on? are they like a sirclip? cause i had a bit of a go at one with a screwdriver and it wouldnt budge. or is it a sleeve thet runs down through the steering arm?? or do i just need to apply more then a moderate amount of force (been sitting in there yard for a while i think, rusted up)
and on a side note is there any markings on the diff's that denote what yr model they came from as the wreckers didnt have the origional vehicle, only his memmory to say they "might " be from an 86-87 model hilux.
and on a side side note does any one know what torque the nuts for those studs should be done back up to (aprox)? cause they were FARKIN tight geting off.

They are called "collets". Kind of like a tapered sleeve that centralises and secures the knuckle arms to the swivel housing. The correct way to remove them is to use a brass drift and a hammer (brass drift is soft and won't damage the stud) to "shock" the collets loose for removal. Once these are out you should be able to remove the arms fairly easily. You can use a flat screwdriver on each side to evenly lever it off.
finaly got the collet's off! now the next question. i can pull the knuckles/sterring arm out about 5mm before they meet some friction.
is the cylinder going into the swivel housing the piviot point for the swivel? should i be taking the whole hub off b4 i pull it out (will the weight of the hub be on the wrong things if i pull this out? is there any thing really stoping the knuckles coming off now the nuts and collets are off (use more force)?

what has happened here now is the king pin bearings have locked up on the shaft of those caps, keep perservering they will come. When you reassemble the axle make sure you put a slight smear of grease on that shaft the bearing rides on.

the 10mm bolts onthe back there will now also have to be removed and you will have to remove the free wheeling hub to have the hub assembly come off.

Got the hub and swivel housing off tonight. greese and blody bearings everywhere. It was a fair mission to pry/hammer the caps/shafts out of the king pin bearings, tryed to push the bearings on by hand once they were out and i cant really see how they were ever going to come off easily! are they ment to be a very tight interferance fit? how am i ment to reinstall them without damaging the bearings?
