Annoying Noise

Hey peeps,

Over the last few months my car has had an annoying whining noise coming from the transfer case area (No it's not the missus!) :rofl:

It is only evident when there is load on the gearbox (accelerating or deccelerating/engine braking) and seems to be in relation to road speed, not engine rpms.

I'm not sure if it's just coincidence, but it seemed to be prominent after my clutch was replaced, and at the same time a new rear transfer case output seal was also installed. The correct seal had to be ordered in, so a 'near enough' seal was fitted, and it seals the oil in just fine.

I am going to put the correct seal in sometime soon, and was wondering if the noise may be an output bearing or similar which is accessible from the rear of the transfer case. i.e I don't need to pull it apart.

So in a nutshell, is there any bearings in the transfer case you can access and replace by removing the rear propshaft and seal, without removing the entire unit?

My luck it'll probably be one deep inside :cry:

Any easy ways to tell which is the noisy offender?

Normaly when the seal is worn and leaking it cause the bearing is buggerd and the shaft is wiggiling around and wearing it

Alrighty, If that's the case how easy is it to change the rearmost bearing?

If its the noise i was listening to the other day, its the T-case bearings Nick. If you want a hand, after the MT is sorted i can help you re-build the t-case.
I would guess you will be pulling the t-case, but that isnt a major job.

Yeah, that's the noise mate.

So you reckon take it out and replace the lot at once then Layto?

After your 'project' we'll have to see about attacking it then. :D

My advice, for what its worth, would be just get in there and do the lot in one go. Other wise you'll be in and out of there more times than you can count if you do them one at a time.

Learnt that the hard way myself... :roll:
