Sierra Gti MK!1,2,3 how do you know the difference?

But I do not know what model the engine is
Any ideas?

Yeah I would have sugessted Redline too. 1988 model engines and previous are all Mk1 and 1989 forward are all Mk2/3. Mk1 is what I have in mine and the ecu only controls fuel not spark and you can't get the awsome drop in chips like the Mk2/3 to suit different mods, even turbo. But the Mk1 does have a few good bits like larger fuel rail etc. The Mk1 also uses points not electronic ignition so if it has an electronic ignition module then it's probably a Mk2/3

they have many differences, easyiest one is intake manifold.
if it haf EPI electrinic petrol ingection, it is mk1
if it has EFI electronic fuel injection it is mk2
if... blank, mk3
although mk 2/3 manifolds are interchangeable. there are very few
diffrenses between these engines, altho the early mk2's had hollow cams.

i just got a GTI motor and also dont know what year or model it is.
the prob i got is that its missing the dizzy and from what i read thier is a few differant types of these to.
it does have efi.
crackatinny when you say EPI do you mean like centre point injection or what?
any more info of how to spot what it is would be good.

I had the same drama with my 1.6 which is EPI (was an imported engine), the dizzy cap was actually off a Mazda 323 or Ford Laser '85 model. Not really sure whether that helps at all probably totally irrelevant....

gti engine is 74kw at the fly (100 hp) equates to about 70 hp at the wheels.
the mk1 engine used a 20mm timing belt and the mk2/3 used a 25.4mm belt.
the mk1 engine the water hose from the air valve on the back of the manifold ran straight to the cylinder head , on the mk2/3 it runs to the thermostat housing .
the mk1 engine has the maf (mass air flow) sensor on the throttle body , the mk2/3 has a seperate maf sensor housing further down the intake tract.
having said all that , the mk1 / mk2 / mk3 thing was fabricated on the internet , their real names are ... mk1 is SA413 dohc , mk2 is SF413 dohc type 1 , mk3 is SF413 dohc type 2 (these engines also have 8 valve brothers in the sohc range)

The epi thing doesn't really tell you much as all japan spec motors had epi
So if you have a mk2 it still can epi on the manifold (it doesn't have to be a Gti-A which had the round rally intake)
Do you have the CPU? Mk1 ecu are a pretty distinct shape, mk2/mk3 look like squares if you search suzuki ecu on ebay all the sidekick samurai ecus look like the the mk2/mk3 ecu
(and i agree with suzimad on the 'correct ' engine references )
