Custom Trans Xmember mounting - MAJOR vibration Advice?
Hey
Thought id post up in the toy section, didnt get much of a response for the gen 4x4 tech.
Im making a custom Xmember for my lux using bubs plate for the back of the trans, also fitting 40mm engine lift.
Now, i was gunna put a tabs on the inside of the chassis rails and mount the Xmember using standard lux leaf spring bushes. The bushes would be in the end pieces of tube. Everything will be gusseted. I have nolothane bushes but rubber bushes would be better id say.
Drew abit of a pic in paint so u get an idea.
I have heard that you get quite abit of vibration through the chassis if its not mounted correctly.
What u think of it, should i do it differently, thoughts anyone?
Post up pics of your custom Xmembers
Cheers

what you are saying there is basicly the best way. I personally use landcruiser rubber bushes, these a little bigger in the OD to help remove a little more vibration.

thats how i have done the gearbox mount on my 40, except solid mounted tube to the gearbox with leaf spring bushes in the end and brackets bolted to the chassis
i will take a foto of it soon
stiffens the mount up a bit, you get slightly more engine vibration. i would use the biggest spring bushes you can get your hands on, but they work well.

I have used the bubs transfer ring, i mounted it the way u have drawn except i cut up a GQ patrol rear trailing arm and used the bushs off it. It doesnt vibrate very much at all, mines a 2.7 petrol so maybe a diesel would vibrate bit more

Thanks for the replys fellas.
I thought about using nissan bushes but i think ill try the cruiser leaf spring ones like bubs said, i know i have some here somewhere and they are bigger than a lux.
Let ya's know how it goes.
Rory and Stoive, u got pics of urs i could checkout?

Ok well i have the Xmember in and is vibrating like fawkn crazy. Its ok if it over 1500 rpm but anything under and its painfull.
Heres a few pics to show how ive mounted it.
The bushes im using are nolothane.
Do you think that if i put rubber in there it would make a big difference?
Other than that ill have to re-do the chassis mounts with some other bush setup.

how far up did u move ur box? any chance that its stressing the engine mounts causing the engine to move more, as this would then transfer more movement down toward the box. Then having ur gearbox mounted so solidly(GREAT THING! no more busted yota mounts) it is sending the vibration threw the frame then threw everything else. 2.8D im guessing? you could try some rubber bushes, would have abit more give in them and maybe take some of the harshness out.
got to love having all that ground clearance tho!

I put a 40mm engine lift in and i pushed the box up another 5-10mm. What i think its doing is vibrating through the mounts on the chassis.
The nolothane is prob not moving at all. Im just about to go loosen the bolts of a little (chassis end) cos i was swinging off them to tighten them up.
Ill triple check that its not hitting on the tunnel or anywhere else.
But other than these things it has to be the mounting to the chassis, i cant see it could be anything else.
Cheers

I just loosened the bolts off a little and it made it abit better not a great deal tho.
I will try rubber bushes if that doesnt work ill have to re-do the mounts to the chassis. I maight use nissan radius arm bushes, the ones on the chassis end they are quite large rubber donut looking units.

I was looking at doing the same setup to mine and emailed the engineer i'm dealing with to see if he would pass it and this is the response I received
"I prefer traditional rubber mount's under the transmission. Typically the stiffness of the transmission mount is about 300 - 600 N/mm while the suspension bushes are of the order of 5000 to 10000 N/mm nearly 10 times stiffer. This puts lot of load in the gearbox and also the brackets. People generally mount it this way to restrict the movement of the engine in 4x4 competition or so. But for street legal purpose we should have proper rubber mount."
I was thinking of something along these lines but using a rubber mount that is similar to the stiffness of the standard mounts sourced from www.mackayrubber.com.au

Not good news, if you can wait a couple of days I will ask a person I know who makes bushes to see if they can make some really soft rubber bushes. I will let you know.

Grublux - Yeah if i have to redo it ill be using 2 standard lux engine mounts on about a 45 degree angle. They should take car of it.
Bubs - Yeah that sounds good. Let me know what u come up with. PM sent

i spoke to my mate this morning should have an answer tommorow on the new bushes
one thing though, I wonder if drilling holes through the bushes like haultech did years ago with the rover radius arm bushes would help?

Sorry justinshere but haven't set it up yet and i've also converted to petrol. I've just been doing my background work so far to keep the engineer happy.
If it's a diesel, it won't matter what bushes you use, it will still be a PITA!
Because the diesel drivetrain actually MOVES side to side when at idle rather than just vibrating, you will need to move your bushes closer together to reduce the resultant vibration. Even with super soft bushes, you'll still be cursing the setup.
The best for you would be to run a solid crossmember through behind the transfer (between the chassis rails) then have a bushed mounting for the transmission plate no more than 300mm apart (maybe 200mm). The problem is under big torque, you might start breaking mounts so you'll have to chain the passenger's side down. I hope that makes sense. That's the way I'd do mine next time just to make it that little bit easier and more comfortable to drive.
Just remember there's a heap of torque if you've got crawler gears and a torquey motor. My transfer crossmember is bent up by about 50mm on the passenger's side from this torque. And I've broken a few transfer case housings as well using using this system.

Very good info thanks beebee.
Being i dont want to change to much of what i already have i was thinking of using standard lux engine mounts and mounting them either at 45 or 90 degrees to the chassis rails and have the crossmember to the top of the mount.
What does everyone think of that?
