Anyone fitted aftermarket cruise control to a GQ 4.2 Diesel?

Post by Mark2 »

I'm looking at an aftermarket cruise control - something like the AP50.

Has anyone done this successfully without major hassles? - I presume the cable in the kit would have to connect directly to the injection pump??

I bought my '89 GQ shorty td42 with an aftermarket kit allready fitted. The cable connected straight to the injection pump as you stated.
The problem I had with it was, unless you were travelling on a flat section of h'way, the engine did not have enough power to stay in fifth gear with the cruise control controller controlling the fuel load. (lots of controls there). Ultimately I would have to go back to fourth by either flat changing or changing back and reseting the cruise control.
That was a pita and I eventually removed the unit.
Don't know much about systems available today but I wouldn't purchase one unless I had plenty of power. ie turbo

I have a turbo and it holds 5th on most highway grades (although EGT's will get up there if you really push it).

I have heard people say that CC with a turbo tends to cause the boost to spike more than normal because without cruise you tend to anticipate the hill and accelerate gradually before, thus reducing the need for a big boost spike.

If anyone is interested in an AP50:

It looks like the Audiovox CCS-100 is the same unit.

The reason I mention this is that they are available on ebay USA and end up being less than $160 delivered.
