GQ 3.0 Lt petrol

Post by Struth »

I am at it again helping people buy Patrols.

We are looking at a GQ with 3.0 petrol engine.

Besides the fact it is a slug, is there anything else to worry about with one of these. It's cheap for a clean GQ that doesn't seem to have done much offroad at $5.5k with RWC and no more to pay.

I guess if the engine goes you just get one from a commodore.

Cheers

the gearboxes seem to have a problem with getting a whine in them, caused by the counter shaft bearings

Yep...your rite...they dont have a lot of power...but there are things that can be done to them that make them go heaps better and give reasonably good fuel economy too.
Apart from that they are totally reliable...bulletproof..(providing they are looked after and serviced properly)....and give better fuel economy once modded than the other nissan petrol motors.
I have heard of the aforementioned gearbox whine....but have always been able to trace it back to poor gearbox service and incorrect grade of oil....so if the truck has been serviced properly there should be no probs.
BTW...My ST30 is currently for sale too...and a better one will be hard to find :D :D

Cheers Keith

Thanks guys, he bought it today, uppped the wheels to 15 x 8 sunnies and had some cheap ATs fitted.

I have already pointed him toward ironman for a 2" lift and shocks.

Here comes another 4B nut.

cheers

The gearboxes are actually quite strong, the wine a lot of the time is from tight asses who tow in 5th or labor their cars in 5th with big load and or big tyres, if running my 35's I dont even use 5th just use more fuel trying to push em at stupidly low revs, and loading up box more. The RB30 is a motor that will go allllot of kays b4 blowing smoke or rattling, diffs are the same as other models but run 4.3 gears....when I was looking for a GQ i was only lookin for these!

A bit more info for those who want to know more about the FS5R30A
