Opinion on Army participation in ASCC

Guys,
Just wondering what people think about this one. I may be in a position to get an assortment of vehicles like:

Landrover 110
Landrover 6X6
Unimog
Unimog MRV (6x6)
M113 Amoured Personel Carrier


To participate in the Townsville rounds of the ASCC or at least a demo. Do people think that this would be a good PR exercise??

I am probably going to go out this weekend and have a look at the track. This is by no means confirmed. I still have to clear it with my boss and most of all check with the guys that are running the comp up here. I do know that my boss is a PR bandit and loves anything that will display the Army in a positive light to the general public. I will see how the poll goes and keep everyone up to date.

Im sure that if the army wanted to get into this sort of thing then they would do fine and could probably be very competitive.

But if you are talking about them using their current vehicles then I dont think it would be a good idea. All their rigs are big and heavy and not setup at all for something like short course. The unimogs would probably be capable enough but you are talking about putting a truck on a course more suited to a suzuki.

If you got the army to setup a course and then let the short course rigs have a got at that then it might work.

And I dont know that I would be talking trash about the army on a public forum cause you never know who you might offend

Hey Thonger I have seen and worked with regs aswell and some of them are not the brightest people in the world. But they can lift heavy things.

Also seen some of there more capaple drivers put loaded mogs in positions that scare alot of people.
I reckon do it.
The mogs are the coolest big trucks. 110's and 6x6's arnt that capable, they have good wheel travel and bottom end power, but there are no traction aids, just open diffs in 99% of them. So a std patrol/cruiser with better suspension would drive better.

Although if you put the 110s in the stock class (cause they are unlocked and have 32in tyres) then they would probably do OK??

Man I don't think it is a real smart idea to put any Current In Service Variant in a comp or out on the track. These are work vehicles designed to carry payloads not competition rigs.

The M113 will destroy the track beyond use if it has a crack at it. Might as well just bring out the TD 15 and drop the rippers.

By all means I think a display would be cool but do it on a different track. The Army teaches more safe driving and recovery techniques than Drive it like you stole it style.

There is no positive PR in a bunch of Army guys getting stuck on the first ledge when a Suzi or Cruiser has just driven over it. Lets not forget the COG of a Uni mog and the tyres they all run.

Horses for courses and ASCC is no place for Army Vehicles.

Nah seriousley it's not a bad scam but you do have to do a hell of a lot of work to the trucks. the vast majority of our time is spent maintaining them not driveing them. if you want to know what it is like to be a driver in the army pm me and i will give you the low down.

as for certin comments here about ARMY blokes being wankers. well put it this way get any group of ppl and you will find that the wankers in the group will allways make the most noise. just don't juge a bloke because of what he does to pay the bills. did those comments worry me? nope a lot of AJ's ARE wankers!

Brad's comment about what the trucks can and can not do is just about dead right. a lot of ppl think the unimog is the be all and end all of the off road world it's not. what it is, is probily the most off road capible truck avaible off the shelf in the world, but it is a truck.

I know a few guys in the army and into 4WDs, I put a couple onto this website. So yeah, there are your wankers, but there are wankers in the 4x4 scene too. (Me for starters) But in every group there is your idiots and the greenies say the same thing about 4x4ers as you guys just said about the army. Its categorising of the worst kind.

A lot of them are really good blokes, so don't knock what they do for a crust, they will be the ones looking after us if the poo hits the fan.

I think a demonstration will be far more beneficial for the armys PR than trying to compete. As a few guys before me have stated quite correctly, the competition vehicles are locked, light and built to compete. The army vehicles are built to carry loads and travel long distance reliably.

You're right Brad, over the years through my work we have dealt with quite a few ADF employees, (Army, Navy and RAAF) and I have never met people with so much commitment to their jobs and passion for their work. Some of these guys were 3rd gen miltary personnel, they had immense respect for their position and the ones who had gone before them.

For the civvies out there, would you say the same about the work you do in civvy land?

It was funny watching the Army do just this at the '89 Jamboree at Mt Seaview. They launched a Mog into the mud pit, tipped it into a tree and had to use the roof hatch to get out. In came the wrecker - bogged. Too many chiefs during the recovery.

In the right hands, these vehicles can be driven into some scary places, but they're set up to do a job.

Mate I have spent days cleaning a rover after a 4 week trip, till it f*&king shines. Even Mr Sheened engine bays, ie rocker cover and hoses, so that the head sheds think it looks pretty and maintained.
And if you break something in the feild they investigate and if they decide you were doing the wrong thing it's user to pay, out of your pay packet before you see it, possibly even charged and convicted. We have to look after our resourses as we don't get enough money as it is.

As i have allready said i am sorry if my comments have affended anyone. It was not aimed at the Australian Army it was aimed at the particular guys that were not giving themselves a good public image on the day.

I have no problems with our armed forces and i voted to let them compete. Or at least have them do a demonstration at this event if its at all possible.
As others have stated i dont think they could be competitive on the coarses that are designed by the ASCC officials but then again i doubt many of the ASCC competitors would do very well on a course that the Army designed for the use of their vehicles.

The Army was up at Mudbash last year with all thier gear, Unimog, Mack recovery truck, Landrover, and 2 personell carriers. Even though they were the only vehicles aloud on the property, let alone near the track, they only gave the carriers a run. It was good to see some action that weekend but a tracked vehicle over an obstical course is nothing too special to see. It would have been good to see the Unimog and LandRover in action to see what they could do.

Thonger, Just had a look over and chat to the guys from recovery this morning. They spent some good amount of coin building those MRV's, but nice truck. Looks like they will be called on to help us some time.

To those that dont know the MRV is a medium recovery vehicle based on a MOG 6x6 chassi (bigger than the std mog) with 2x hyd winches, crane and some other very usfull recovery gear.

Nah, i'm have applied to go in as a spec comms operator. I go 4 last day of testing on monday. But it will be fun!!

Get the army stuff out there and just do some easy stuff. They dont have to compete just be there to show people what the army do then people go "that looks cool, me gonna join!!"

I am part of a very big organization and to sit here and say every person I have ever met in the army is a top bloke would be an out and out lie. Maybe you should have another read of my post, it is as are all of my posts NOT TO BE TAKEN TOO SERIOUSLEY. Can you say that is not one person in your profession that is a wanker? I stand by the sprit of what I said but let me add that I have also made a lot of life long mates and that %99 of the people that I work with are the best people that you would ever hope to meet.

Me a pr man? Nope no way I’m far too honest. Yes I understand that in everything I do and say I am in a way an ambassador for the ARMY and the ADF. But am I not going to deny myself a sense of humor and my right to not take myself too seriously.

If you can’t pull the piss out of yourself you need to take a real long hard at what you are trying to achieve with your short time on this planet.

I've been eyeing off that central tyre inflation set up. if I could take one thing from all the mill vehicles i have seen that would be it! funny thing is that it's in no way a new idea WW2 ducks had it! but it seems it has just never caught on in the civi world. shame not the be all and end all but would be very very handy.

Thats allright we got the bushranger crew moving in next door to us and one of the project dudes is my Transport Super from last 2 years in Bris. So we should get some wheel time hopefully.
