5L diesel engine info wanted

Would like to know some more about 5L (3.0 litre) Toyota diesel engines- are they stronger internally than 3L? Was there a factory turbo? Can they be built for more power?
This would be to replace 3L in a hilux, something with a big turbo/ intercooler and no electronics would be nice (Thats if the electronic and non electronic injection pumps are interchangeable).

5L is almost a straight replacement for a 3L. Some have slightly different mounting than 3L.
5l never any factory turbo.
There's, 5L no electronics and the 5L-E, electronic obviously with a little more power.
Common turbo to mount is CT26, with this the power is almost that of a 1kz. CT20 is to small.

I almost put one in my lj70, bundera, but a 1kz came up, so I went for that.

not sure on the internal strength etc but the factory turbo 3.0l motor was the 1KZ-TE, an entirely different motor to the 5L 3.0 NA diesel.

Have considered the 1kzte but would rather put in petrol motor if there's electronics involved.
Thanks for clearing up about factory turbo, makes sense now why nobody seems to prefer these over their 3L's.

Hey, don't forget there is a 5L and a 5L-E. Both factory units, the 5L is non electronic.

The main reason you don't see alot of these engines is because they are actually not too common, not many around.

I almost went for one and was going to fit the CT26 turbo.

Identical to the 3L bar the bore/stroke and a few engine bay accessorys such as the airbox. I hav not seen anything personally but hav heard rumours of forged rebuild kits for the L series diesels. The CT20 turbo works alrite with them, the CT26 is from the GT4 celicas, not to sure how well it works with the diesel, If anything I think it wud be to big for the 3000RPM rev range. The 1KZ actually runs a smaller CT12B turbo and seems to go good for a 3.0L. If all else fails u cud go a roller bearing garret, say a GT2560r w/o cooled with a custom manifold and a straight 3" mandrel pipe.

I was looking into building a bored out turbo, intercooled, gas injected, chipped 5LE but did the sums and the 1UZ conversion seems better bang for buck, Will be interested to c how u go. Cheers

I'm thinking about turboing my 5-Le. Looking at the turboglide kit with the garrett rollerbearing turbo.
Would go water/air intercooler down the track and also run gas.
Was thinking a unichip and run 2 seperate tunes. 10 psi for economy and say 18psi for power.

Wouldn't a 3 inch exhaust be to big for the 5-Le :?: I was thinking about going 2 3/4 inch stainless if I turbo mine.

Have also heard the 5L is weak and dont like much boost but not sure how good the source is.

The 5L is no weaker or stronger then any of the L series diesels. The only reason ud go a 3" is to help absorb and desperse the exhaust gases faster, running 18psi and the fuel to match wud generate a decent EGT reading so the faster u can get the gases out the back the better. Ther is no need for back pressure with a turbo engiine as the turbine wheel creates its own backpressure in the manifold, so u cud run as big a pipe as u wanted without any power loss.
