I'm trying to source some 10AWG cable to upgrade my headlight wiring. I've looked at Jaycar and Altronics but all they sell is 12AWG and 8AWG.
Using a voltage drop calculator it says I need 4mm2 wire, whereas 12AWG is 3.5mm2 and 8AWG is 7mm2. Hence I don't want to use 12AWG since if I'm going to do it only once then I may as well overdo it
Does anyone know where to buy 10AWG cable in the Sydney Inner West? It seems to be not a very common size for wiring?
I've got heaps of 8AWG as I bought some for 'work' use so I might use that. The only problem is 8AWG is bloody stiff cable so is hard to work around corners etc.
There's cable and there's cable. Check the Jaycar/Altronics stuff, as it might be multi-strand high-flex stuff (for the doof-doof boys) which will route much easier than the "bloody stiff" stuff you currently have.
"Bloody stiff" (low strand count) wire is more susceptible to vibration induced cracking, so it's probably not a good idea for a vehicle anyway - particularly a 4by.
Bugger buying from car accessory stores, try Middendorps, Lawrence & Hanson etc.
Search Yellow Pages for electrical suppliers, you'll get exactly what you want and a lot cheaper.
