220kms til out of fuel
220kms til out of fuel
I have a Sierra with the baleno efi 1.6 conversion and a coily tank, vitara pump, Now i am only getting 220kms per tank frequently. I was running 29's at the time, so bout 20L for 100km
Santos recomended to do a injector clean as they may be blocked, The engine had 150,xxx on it when i bought it.
Does anyone else have bad fuel consumtion with another 1.6 doesnt matter if vitara?

Damn thats terrible. My flogged out 1.3L on 32 swampers gets around 10L/100km in traffic. Give the motor a good general service and tune first, check the basics like timing etc. Check your vacum lines and sensors. Fuel economy is very dependant on your driving style too, so this may be a part of it.

Check all the fuel lines and connections for leaks. I had fuel leaking out of a dodgy cap on an unused breather on my long range tank.
BTW I get 11-13L/100km with my 1.6efi and running 32's.
Hope you can find your problem, especially with the price of petty these days

Re: 220kms til out of fuel
i was more suggesting that they could be stuffed, as in the fuel pumping through the nozzle even when the it's in its 'closed' position.BlueSuzy wrote:

If they where holding fuel then dirty injector could give an erratic spray pattern causing low power which in turn may result in more fuel being pumped in by the ecu and right foot!

Also forgot to add to check the tempature of the air going into engine. Hot air will really mess with your air fuel ratio (is the air temp sensor connected?)
If the airbox is sucking air from the front of the engine you may be pumping in heat from the radiator. A,lso check the entire path of flow to the throttle body is it getting cool air then being heated along the way?

1.3 Extractors through to 2" exhaust standard gearing on 235/75/15's
10/100km's driving like my mum.
10.6-11/100km's driving like I stole it.
20/100km's Give it a good service and tune up like mentioned above. Fuels too expensive these days for you to be running it with it's current fuel consumption. If it doesn't improve the economy after a good service, maybe the motor's getting a bit tired…
Time for a recon?

My tank is a "perfect straight but rare coily tank".
I knew 220kms is shocking, That was just around town.
The engine light is not on, It is connected. That would tell me if there's an error? Correct?.
The air temp sensor is in the throttle body, Baleno motor. Vitaras have the external sensor.
Still testing the 33's, i need to get off the pedal for a good clean run. Cos also my springs are warped too now....
I dont think there is any power loss cos taking off will still spin the 33's in 2nd with a welded diff, brand new nankangs....And in the wet
Normal Unleaded is way too expensive also i know! But im not putting any ethanol in my cars...
This is where my airbox is. I have now changed it about 2weeks ago. Still testing. The intake port is on the left, runs inline with the horizontal box bracket. If u get me...

thats a pretty interesting configuration. (its hooked up in reverse)
Still i am guessing that hot air is rising off the exhaust manifold flowing over the rocker and straight into the airbox.
In stock form a 1lt airbox may be too restrictive for the 1.6l
Might be an idea to go back to pick and payless and get a commodore airbox or something and scavenge for the cleanest filter. Add some plumbing so its draawing cool air behind the battery

mines the same as Skez - 31's and getting around 200-220 from a tank... im geared at the tcase with a 1.6 and weber though, so i'd expeect to use a little more fuel than a 1.3. but when you factor in a 20% difference for tyre size, 220km = 262km... so still not good for 30L of fuel =)
The worst thing about censorship is ███████.
Like i said, i put the airbox on bout 2weeks ago, still same mileage...bout average 220kms
Just put some injector cleaner stuff in the full tank, see how we go..
Also i have no thermostat. Would this mean that the engine could be running cold constantly, running it rich so if it was like startup all the time?
I bought a temp gauge today just to make sure of this, Yet to hook it up. What degrees should a 1.6 normally come to running temp?
I do get alittle fumes everynow and then too, Noticed this morning.

Would've been cheaper to fill up with E10 petrol for the next few tank loadsBlueSuzy wrote: Just put some injector cleaner stuff in the full tank, see how we go..
No thermostat? Why? if the engine runs to hot with one rig ups somer air ducts so all the air is forced to the radiator, a lot of air just shoots pass the sides rather than through. I tested this idea a while back by making a temp system with carboard and duct tape. the engine ran noticably cooler in a 1hr crawl to the city during peak hour traffic

Yep, put the thermostat back in.
If it's not getting warm It'll be staying on open loop and using lots of fuel. It won't be throwing trouble codes. It will drive fine as the car will run open loop under full throttle anyway so you won't feel any difference either way.
AFAIK, 1.6's should run about the same temp as a 1.3, so about 1/3 of the way up the gauge on your 1.3 dash.
Steve.

arg! so i bought the temp gauge for nothing? The temp is always below the low, on rock bottom. It is hooked up to old sierra temp guage..
I've had it up to 3/4 once on sand before i lowered the tyres.
Also when it was that high the exhaust sounded different.
Well i will have to mod my piping for a thermostat, because when i did the conversion, i made the water pipe without 1. Stupid mechanic mate told me oh dont worry bout that! Sounds like thats the problem!
Also the computer has a white backup wire.. Is this meant to be hooked up straight to the battery (for backup or memory) ? May be another reason.

If you left the thermostat out does that mean you left the housing out that has the temp sensor that goes to your computer off? This is the hardest part of the baleno conversion IMHO. This is how I did one recently:
(Both photos are from the rear. This setup clears the firewall well, but this car does have a BL in it.
It's a complete PITA to change the thermostat, but the car cools properly with a sierra radiator and mechanical fan.
Yes, the computer needs constant power. It "learns" and needs constant power to remember it's operating conditions This won't be helping.

Ah ok So i will hook up this constant power wire as i thought this may be the problem, Might hurt the computer and engine after a while.
Just sorting out the final parts of the conversion. Although have been driving it for bout 3 months
I did also tap a hole in the pipe for the sensor and extended the wires for the plug. Because i knew it would want the sensor.
This is my piping, Gwagon, you helped me and you commented on your piping how you did it before i know. Looks good.
These are my pics atm Of how its done. Going to have to mod it again before another trip!
