PTO questions

Post by NJV6 »

Hi guys.

A few PTO questions

PTO drives on the side of the transfer case..... I know they will bolt up to all boxes but only work on the early ones with 1.944 ratio.

It is that they won't mesh with the V6 box with the 1.925 ratio simply because of the slight ratio difference?

Nitteberg has got 2.85 gears then the PTO wouldn't work so got custom gears. Does the PTO run at the same speed as original or does the 2.85 gears slow the winch down as well?

Did the 2.85 gears fit the gen 1 box such as the one nitteberg runs?

I have seen a couple of Gen 2 with factory PTO's. Both have been Diesel JTop so a PTO drive must be available for super select.

Phew!

Nitteberg has the first 2.85/PTO combo. I have the only other one in existence.

I had Mark Hardman manufacture a one-off custom set (second and only other set he's made) of PTO gears which would mesh with the 2.85 gearset.

Never having had the PTO when I had the stock t-case gears, I don't have any comparison data regarding how the 2.85s would affect PTO speed, but my guess is that it would drive the PTO slower.

Thanks for your reply.

Do you find when winching in 1st low if you get traction you overrun the winch speed? With the std gears this happens. With a PTO such as a Nissan which runs off the gearbox input shaft low transfer gears work great as wheel speed matchs winching.

I'll let you know when I install my winch. It's still sitting on my garage floor waiting on me to modify my winch-bumper's mount plate. The winch I got is not the Pajero winch. I picked up a used Ramsey PTO winch and it's wider that the winch mounting base of my bumper. Once I cut and re-weld it I'll be able to mount the winch. I've just been busy with other stuff that it's been on the back burner.

Regardless, I'm not sure I'd be able to give you comparative info as I'm not sure whether or not the internals of the Ramsey winch are working with comparative ratios.

does annone know exactly what needs to be changed on a gen 2 superselect to get a pto drive working. without 2.85 gears?
ive heard you need to get a gen 1 transfur and change the internals into the superselect casing then put the pto drive on the side and mount the winch etc? anyone know any details or has anyone on here done it?

itl be a long time till i can get 2.85 gears.

Hi Sam

I will try to answer your questions. I assume the Gen 2 Super select casing is coming from a 2.8L diesel? You can use back the entire transfer box as is and hunt or custom the PTO adapter.

mine is a 3.0 v6. if i got a custom gear for the PTO drive unit would i be able to bolt it onto my gearbox and use it?

Hi Sam

I dun see why not. As long as the adapter gear is properly done, you have a PTO winch!
