Diesel Economy
Hey guys
Thinking of stepping out of my V8 Discovery and look at a diesel replacement...
As I am rebuilding a Shorty 40 its a run around car, somthing to tow a trailer, carry four people and cheaper than what my 1997 V8 Disco is worth.
What kind of economy are you guys getting out of BJ40/42s and 60 series diesel, hiluxes etc? I am worried about being a lemon and needing a $3000 diesel pump rebuild or whatever it costs - which models have proven most reliable/cheapest for you?
Thanks in advance

tyre size and tare weight will affect mileage somewhat. a 2h 60 in good nic could easily see 10l on the highway with skinny tyres. worst I did in mine on 33x12.5's was 15l, and that was carrying a ethnic person box on a trailer. (it was a slow trip). best i did was 10.5 average over a full tank about 50 percent highway, and on 31x10.5's. average over it's life was 11-12l
a 1hz 80 constant 4wd. average 11-12 keeping the revs below 2500 (revs in a 1hz will chew the fuel). towing a 4runner on a trailer used about 19l (pretty crap i think) that's on 33x12.5s, and not much weight over stock. has a 4 inch lift though which may cause slightly more drag.
but as stated on these slow non turbo toyotas, you will get better performace/economy with smaller, skinny tires.
Don't worry too much about buying a lemon. if the diesel starts up without too much hassle, starts smoothly (without shaking the shit out of the car) smoothly, idles smoothly (rev-wise) and drives without any hesitation/flatspots or apparent missing the pump is likely all good. Shutdown should also not shake the truck.
Check for diesel leaks around the injector pump though. The sulfur content in diesel has been reduced recently, which is causing seal failures in old pumps (and by old i mean pre 2000ish). This doesn't affect performance.
