tyres, 33" recommendations

Post by bigbad »

Looking at fitting some 33s to my 110, just wondering on others experiences with the common brands, most likely BFG ATs or wrangler MTRs at present, will be my daily driver in the near future so need to know a bit about road manners and noise also, any comments appreciated. Thanks.

Howdy..

I currently have 33 x 12.5 BFG muds...great tyre...but my truck is not a daily driver...I guess they are a little noisy on bitumen...but a V8 with extractors soon gets rid of the noise...

I can't really comment on any other brand as I have always stuck with BFG as I have never had a problem with them.

I used to have a variety club bash car (peugeot 504) that ran Goodyear wranglers but had heaps of problems with delaminating...so I have never touched them since.

Funnily I've had a reverse experience to Andrew. I just bought a set of 285/75R16 Goodyear MT/R's. Dear as poision though but the joys of interest free I can pay them off.

I had a set previously on another Rangie and even with 50K on the clock, they had plenty of meat left on them considering that I gave them a hammering off-road. I staked one and the sidewalls are grestrong as (cut the cord but still the tyre didn't leak). I replaced it as a matter of safety and used it as a spare after getting it vulcanised :)

BFG's I wouldn't touch again. Had a set about 12 months ago, crap sidewalls but okay in the mud and off-road. Punctured one on my second trip out and nearly staked 2 more on other trips so I ofloaded them in a hurry.

If you want a good cheap tyre, the Silverstone MT117 sports are great  . Not overly road friendly but they'll paly hard.

Everyone has a differnt opinion on tyres, it's what works for you and what you needs are.

Good luck,

I agree with Trav. I have a set of 285/75-16 MTRs that have 40k km on the clock yet are less than half worn. Heaps of offroad use at 7psi and never lost a bead or staked one. Recently drove Brisbane-Perth on them.

On my other landy I have 255/85-16 Bighorns. They have great grip and handling but have already staked one. For the price I am 100% happy, but time will tell if they are as good as the MTRs.

agree again, had BFG's not too bad offroad, crap in the wet though - rock, bitumen. and they seem to go hard as a rock once half worn, same as coopers.

in having both 285/75's and 33 x 12.5's MTR's i'd never get the 15" MTR again though, noisy as crap, and handled like shiat after having the 285's, the 285's i got better mileage too.

i was quiet suprised by the silverstones you had trav, they're on micks defender at the mo, and i bagged them till isaw them at ormeau the other weekend and they went well.

have 33x12.5 mickey T's MTZ's at the moment, and seem really good ON ROAD and sand - don't take them playing they're my city tyres. should've bought 16's but didn't want more rims.

thanks guys, the MTRs seem to be a better price too. I would prefer to stick with the rims I have if I can, I have two sets of Cheviot 15 x8s but I could wait for a while and get some 16s, I have some near new 31/ 10.5 Duellers at present so could keep them for a bit longer. I have Silverstone 117s on the RR now that I pulled off the disco I scrapped, they were near new, but I find them very noisy on the road.

35s will be unsuitable with the 1.210 transfers, dont want to have to change gearing or lift any further. I have 31s which are good, but wanted something just a little larger.
