cooper discoverer s/t tyres

I recently purchased a set of cooper discoverer st and have noticed that they have what looks like drilled holes in the outer tread blocks all the way around the tyre is part of the tread pattern or have these holes been added by the tyre shop where i got them fitted.any info helpfull

they're probably tread depth indicators.. when the holes dissapear then you need new tyres. not 100% certain but i assume this would be the reason
