WHY DIESEL??????????????
WHY DIESEL??????????????
alright guys, never owned a diesel and never driven one off road and am about to purchase a GQ ute 4.2l petrol on gas, do i hold out for a diesel???why are they so good???
surely economy isnt better than the petrol on gas
petrol shits itself so easy to fix and cheap
and you can rev the pettys and flog em round

1 you can run a diesel under water providing you have a snorkel
2 if your alternator stuffs up 4bing a diesel will run all day no dramas
3 longer lifespan providing there looked after
4 you can make your own biodiesel
sure theres heaps more good points but i just woke up

If i just overtook you head to your nearest mechanic
Depends what you mean by "economy".
Fuel consumption is much lower with a diesel; TB42 on gas will use upwards of 25 litres of gas per 100km travel, a diesel will use half that much diesel to travel 100km.
The gas still works out cheaper with current prices, but you do have to fill the tank pretty often and you won't get gas anywhere near metro prices (if at all) in a lot of places.
One big positive for a diesel, you get to enjoy the scenery a lot more wherever you go... because you're going so slow The petrol/gas option is much more peppy.

Sure if your alternator stuffs up the engine will keep running but the replacement alternator is going to cost five times as much as a petrol one would.ssfabricator wrote:2 if your alternator stuffs up 4bing a diesel will run all day no dramas

This is not legal advice.
biggest advantage is the water issue, i have an MK sd33t my mate has a 4.2 pety in his GQ, we go mud bashing a fair bit or river crossings i obviously have no dramas and quite often have the bonnet under water.
My mates GQ has to cross bog holes going relativly slow as to not get any water or steam in his dizzy or around the plugs, and if it's too deep he's in trouble anyway. we find he gets stuck in bog holes and mud flats alot, then its a PITA to get her running again if its been swiming.
the altinator issue for repaires is simple only two things go wrong with altinators, brushes and diodes. both are very easy to fix and will only stuff up if not cleaned properly after mud bashing. Goes for diesel and petty alike

A diesel alternator will have issues like wear on the shaft where the oil seal is, open circuit in the rotor, etc. And when these do fail you are looking around $500 for a replacement.Patchy wrote:biggest advantage is the water issue, i have an MK sd33t my mate has a 4.2 pety in his GQ, we go mud bashing a fair bit or river crossings i obviously have no dramas and quite often have the bonnet under water.

A speed camera would have prevented that!
You can get diesel basically anywhere. If you run out you could get some from a friendly trucky if out woop woop. LPG stations, in the middle of nowhere and you really can't take spare LPG with you.
If you are a bushy stick with the oiler. If you your just want a fourby get the gas one.

sounds like im goin petty/gas for sure
not any really great reasons for goin diesel
if im out woop-woop which is every blue moon ill just run petrol.
as far as waters concerned i have always carried round a cpl of spark plugs, takes what 5 minutes to change.
I will save a good 2 thousand if not more buyin a petrol car
cheaper to run
cheaper to fix and replace stuff
and can rev the shit out of em
and if it does blow up can get another engine for cpl hundred bucks not 2-4 thousand

enjoy revving the crap and swapping parts out on a petrol while smelling a burnt out clutch.
by the time youve done all that, ill idle past you in my diesel and love how much fuel im not burning off road cause im not revving the shit out of it and risking breaking cv's uni, etc.
Enjoy it.
Mate, if i had the choice... I'd totally go Diesel... Unfortunately the rig that popped up when I was shopping for my GQ was petrol/gas and a steal at the price I got it otherwise I would have waited for the Diesel one to come along.
I really don't understand why you want to rev the crap out of it? Most of your torque (the useful kind of power) comes from down low... even in the straight 6 petty... Revving past the torque is just a bloody good way to waste petrol.

i have had a Petrol/Gas Maverick and now have a Diesel Patrol
I loved the extra power of the Petty/Gas especially going up hills, 4th gear kept me at 110K's with 35's and standard 3.9:1 Diffs
The Diesel is slower up hills (doin 85-90 up the same hills with 35's on) but in the bush, wow what a different engine
I am the person who can't help but play in mud and water crossings, and the diesel with snorkel has given me no worries, i can cross anything and not worry about electrics, had that problem with the mav, but alot of time and effort got me sealing up the dizzy.
As for fuel, a full days 4x4ing would see me use a full take of LPG, it did go nice on gas in the bush, no stalling like Petrol does, so it behaved like a diesel, it even would idle over stuff, but the diesel uses even less, i can do a full day with the engine never off and i will use maybe 1/4 of a tank, out there, its so much better in the dirt.
AA's for Quitters
I'm with u mate. I love the type of power diesels make. I prefer a bit more ease and comfort when going offroad, along with the availability of fuel. Having a diesel under the bonnet just feels tough to me. Each to their own i guess.pongo wrote:Sounds to me like you wouldnt understand how to drive a diesel anyway.whythef@#!not wrote:sounds like im goin petty/gas for sure

I might get flamed for this one... But I've always found it easier to get stuck in a petrol than a diesel...

yeah diesel aint that much better. they are just as bad in water if there is a leak somewhere. the only difference is that there is no coil or dizzy to get wet.
i had a diesel and hated it being slow, hated the soot left everywhere and hated the oil left everywhere when i parked. i also hated having slippery feet after filling up and having slippery hands after filling up.
if the tanks arent full and the car is left for too long it fills up with mould and the filters get rooted. the fuel economy isnt THAT much better if you drive the petrol sensibly either. as for range. almost all petrol stations have petrol aswell as diesel. and if your stupid enough to go so far out of the way that you might run out of fuel your a tool anyway.
i did the sums recently and they work out to be about the same price over 10 years. if you add to that an injector pump rebuild then your a long way behind.
i still like diesel dont get me wrong, but for what i think you want to do petrol gas will be great and you wont look back.

turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown
you can still rev a diesel to 4Kwhythef@#!not wrote:when i say reving it, its good when ya get stuck in a mud hole to be able to give her the berries to get out. not stop as soon as the wheels start spinnin to hook the snatchy up, NO FUN. apart from mud, i cruise where i can but its good to know i can give her some when i have too.
they are governed at 4400 or thereabouts for a reason...you can use the revs when you need them.
turbo diesel with a bit of diesel gas love, what more could you ask for?

Never had any trouble with my tb42 in water!
I initially wanted a diesel but very happy with my petrol/lpg. Still costs me bugger all to run and so far have not come close to running out of range with the 2 tanks although obviously long distance remote touring would be hard but i hvae no plans for that.
James
Also if your tb42 dies there are always a few for sale on here for bugger all

GQII Patrol YAY!!
if nothing else, the sound of a turbo diesel, is just nice....
and i can drag off most cars at the lights in my diesel surf, and could in my diesel MQ aswell... the look on peoples faces when a "dirty old diesel" leaves them in your puff of smoke = PRICELESS!!!

to be honest if your not doing any long trips out the middle of no where or towing alot and things.. dont bother with the diesel..
i bought one.. i get sick of the slowness.. going up hills i got fuck all power.. mind you my engine is now stuffed going to cost me 7 grand if i rebuild.. all to pay 1.80 for 1 litre when my mate is getting over 400kms out of his 100 litre gas tank..
in diesels defense you do have a shit load of tourqe that you can use so you may be redling in 1st or second through a bog hole but if its really that bad a diesel you can go into 3rd easy and keep the wheels spinning faster again..

another thing i have found is that on the beach the petrol engines would over heat if worked too hard. but a diesel will do it all day, but the petrol engine was more capable on the beach with the extra power and the auto. i don't like the mud so if i was to do it again i would go petrol auto for sure and making sure it was on gas as they like to drink ALOT. If you geting a petrol make it an auto and get some rockhopper gears
just my 2 cents
