A NEW ENGINE CONVERSION FOR PATROLS

Post by giantracing »

HI
JUST A VERY QUICK THING, I HAVE BEEN DOING SO MANY ENGINE CONVERSIONS TO PATROLS LATELY EG..TD 4.2 TURBO REPLACE OF RD28. TD42 TURBO INSTEAD OF PETTY, AND OF CAUSE LEXUS V8/HOLDEN V8/FORD V8. BUT HERE IS THE THING I AM RUNNING OUT OF ENGINES!!!!!!. SO WHAT DO YOU THINK OF DOING A 4BTA CUMMINS TURBO DIESEL 4 CYLINDER 185 HP STANDARD OR OVER 220 HP RETUNED. THESE ARE A GREAT ENGINE BUILT FOR HUGE TORQUE AND CAN DO A MILLION HRS BEFORE ANY ENGINE ISSUES. THEY ARE NOT A BIG REVING ENGINE MAX-3500-4000 RPM. BUT BEST TORQUE AT BEST RPM IS AROUND 2900RPM. I AM GOING TO MAKE MY OWN ADAPTOR CUSTOM CLUTCH/ OR I CAN PUT TURBO400 BEHIND THEM. I WORKED OUT COST WLL BE ABOUT $8000- $10000 MANUAL OR AUTO. SO MY QUESTION IS WOULD YOU CONSIDER PAYING FOR SOME THING A BIT DIFFERENT EG.. MORE HP,4 CYL,GOOD FUEL,CHEAP REGO,EASY TO WORK ON VERY RELIABLE FOR YOUR PATROL..............
build em tuff, drive em ruff.........

I personally wouldnt spend that much on a GQ conversion (comp guys might), but if I was someone who had say a GU 2.8 or a blown GU 3.0 it would have to be an attractive propostion and a cheap way to get something at the very least comparable to a GU TD42T by the sounds of it.

Are they a fairly smooth engine or do they vibrate like the old Isuzu truck engines?

What are the specs? eg overhead cam, direct injection, multivalve, variable vane, weight, capacity? etc What donor vehicles are they found in?

The yanks do this conversion into toyotas a bit cause theres a lot of cummins over there.... seems the main issue is the height of the motor.. hard to get clearance under the bonnet n above the diff without a fairly big lift... 5" min i think... or soa...i think there quite heavy as well.....while the theory is good the practical side may be a pita... but hell, have a go thats for sure..

Just toss and NV4500 behind it, or some other gear boxes.

Be aware the cummins in one hella loud motor and shakes a fair amount. That doesn't bother me but it might bother some people.

I went into wreckers the other day researching, engines for my patrol. The guy behind the counter got very excited and told me about someone he knew doing the same cummins coversion. Then he rang them to get some info for me, turns out they were 5-7 months off having it ready. Unless thats you, sounds like you have some compertion.
Anything is possible, it just comes down to time and money.
