NL Petrol wont start

Post by Dexter »

Hey guys today I was going to drop the Pajero off to the mechanic to have some work done to it, but when I jumped in it, it wouldent start.

My first thought was the battery so I got the jumpers out and attempted to give her a jump but no difference. The starter isnt even trying to turn over, I can hear a relay clicking under the passenger dash. But cant hear the starter clicking(as you often can when you have bugger all power).
Could it be the power or do you think the immoboliser could be playing up?

I think I will try roll starting it tonight to see if that works.

Any other ideas?

Battery connection...?

Do the lights work well?

With mine the -ve battery terminal is a bit dodgy, can have full power then one time it won't go and voltmetre says about 7 volts. give it a wiggle and away it goes.

Must be a pajero thing, I have been suffering that for quite some time, I have replaced the positive connector, but that didnt solve anything for me, I will try replacing the negative one.

When I left the key in the on position for sometime the volt meter got well over 12V. I will get a mate to crank it and I will check with a multimeter tonight.

Yes for me it is the negative terminal. The lead is squished around the cable and not bolted to it - I discovered it was the -ve as when trying to start it one day there was a wisp of smoke from it as the connection shorted.

Turns out its the starter motor solenoid, its totally toast, removed the starter and solenoid and the outer casing of the solenoid is so corroded you can see the contacts inside.

I'll share an experience I had a few years back.

We were travelling thru the Kimberley and the roads were very corrugated. Finally got to Broome and the battery "died". Less than 1 year old. I used teh jump starter battery pack and got it going. A few weeks later after a lot more corrugations,we were at Port Hedland and it "died" again. Jump start. New battery says me. They test the old one and it shows fine. No, new battery please _ I don't want to be stranded in the middle of the Nullabor with a dead battery and no-one around. So I pay for the new battery....

The guy stamps the new one with his code and I go to fit it. Undo the battery clamp. There is a small bracket onto which the + ve leads bolt. That had been vibrated loose. It was too late - I had paid for the new battery and couldn't go back on that. He was a good guy and I had got it at a good price, so I chalked that one up to experience.

Yeah my battery is very old and crusty looking so I didnt have much hope for it.

While I was removing the starter I noticed that the two rubber gromets either side of the bellhousing had come off(clutch inspection ones I think). So thats why my car was such a pig to change gears when I sunk her in water.

Been thinking about how to keep water out of the bellhousing / starter motor.

Anyone ever thought about tapping a small hole at the bottom of the bellhousing and one at the top, running a few PSI into the one at the top allowing the air to escape out the bottom(or the inspection ports) thus helping water escape if it does get into the bellhousing, because thats what I think killed mine. I got stuck nose first in a big hole a few weekends before the starter died.

Any ideas?
