zook dies at speed.
zook dies at speed.
the beast has developed a missfire and loss of power when driving. started playing up on way out last sunday. It would just suddenly cut out and pop and fart untill you pulled over . After a few minutes looking for any loose wires or bad conections it would start up and idle as normal.
Did this all day. The higher the constant revs were the quicker it would play up again. On the way home it got that bad it was backfiring and blowing flames out exhaust. as a last ditch effort to get home we had to hot wire the coil. this helped but ya could still feel it trying stutter.
Now since getting home i have replaced the dizzy, coil, tried different leads, checked and cleaned the plugs, and even did a compression test but still it cuts out.
Any ideas of what to check or replace next.
Cheers

Check the catalytic converter mate, This is what happened to me when My cat blocked itself up....It would idle ok but when you upped the revs it would die. It got worse and worse until the car wouldn't even start as I had jammed too much rusted Cat into itself....

I also had a similar sounding problem where i would start to drive the 30k's to work and about half way the engine would all of a sudden just stop and i'd have to pull over to the side of the road. the problem with mine was when it died all the dash lights would go out as well. but i'd wait a while (2-3 mins) and i'd have dash lights when i turned the key so away i'd go. A few k's down the road it would do it again.
Turned out it was the wiring for the ignition switch had gotten hot and melted the connectors together and was shorting out, so it would cut all the power to the coil and therefore stop.
Hope this might help.

Do Zuks have a strainer in the petrol tank ?
my guesstimate would be fuel related as well !!!
wen it does the backfiring & spluttering , if you clutch it , does it idle ??
sounds like the normal "carp" in carby , either blocking ya main fuel jet , or needle & seat sticking !!

Re: zook dies at speed.
Mine does the same thing. Only in cold weather (esp with head wind) on highway runs 80km/h+. I pull over for a min and it will idle very low occasionally stall, so I'll will sit there and put my foot on the throttle for a bit and its back to life and good for another 20 or 30kms or in some cases won't have any problems for the rest of the trip. I can only put it down to cold weather. I have checked fuel pump, water in the tank, leads, dizzy, plugs, carb and still does the same thing. I recently had the carbie rebuilt and it did it less but still occurred. The zook has a snorkel on it so I have removed the warm air hose completely.built4thrashing wrote:the beast has developed a missfire and loss of power when driving. started playing up on way out last sunday. check you charcoal cannister. THIS IS the breather for the tank and is a service item that is supposed to be changed every 100k or so. disconnect the breather line, take it for a drive and see what happens. eliminate the simple shit first.

i think everyone is right. the carby prob is icing up a bit. gonna go over everything on the weekend and see where the problem lies. ordering new dizzy cap, leads and plugs so i can eliminate these as the cause.
Oh and im not using the original carby. Im using a 4K corolla carby with a snorkel. The hot air pick up is gone.

If it does turn out to be carby icing issue, try running without the snorkle when its cold, if possible. Use the under bonnet air.
The ice cold air rammed down my snork ices mine up, usually only at high speeds, and worse when I boot it.
zook carby is warmed by radiator water, but is not effective in extreme cold. assuming it ain't blocked up.
I run a basic 1.0 litre air box, and can switch it from snorkle to warm intake when needed.
Solved my icing issues.

now that i think about it it was playing up a bit a few weeks ago. wasnt even a cold day but it was nowhere as bad.
Plugs, cap and leads ordered already so that should eliminate them from the problem.

A thing to watch out for, especialy with mods etc, is clearance of plug leads from the bonnet. Took me yonks to discover that, cos when bonnets up, it goes fine.built4thrashing wrote:now that i think about it it was playing up a bit a few weeks ago. wasnt even a cold day but it was nowhere as bad.

Coil could be leakin spark, too.
Check it out in darkness, any errant sparks will show up.
Apparently they can be heard, too.

Going by the state of his wiring I'd almost say something is earthing somewhere randomly.
My other big bet is the bushes in the shaft of the dizzy are cactus.
fuel pump not keeping up could be an issue.
try checking the pressure at end of fuel line, just before the carb.
I just run the end into a glass jar, and see how fast it pumps, and that also checks for crud in fuel.
be wary of errant leaking sparks going boom
new fuel pump can fix some carb probs, too.?

just to update this. kinda fixed the problem and its amazing how simple it was. fuel pump wasnt pumping enough fuel to the carby. Visualy checked rear filter and there was no crap in it but after disconnecting the hoses to it and blowing through the fuel lines the problem seems to have dissapeared. there was a blockage somewhere. im guessing it was in the tank. need to drain the tank and give it a flush out
seems ok at the moment but a decent run will test it.
