I run 10 degrees and set with a timing light at idle which on mine is about 1000 rpm , Cheers Paul.

It has to be at idle then set it to 10d for 1300 or 8d for 1600,I dont think the vacuum advance should be working at idle if thats what you meant?

Do you guys use the timing mark on the front pulley, or the one on the flywheel?

I prefer flywheel.

Thoughts?

Your actually ment to disconnect the vac advance when setting timing.
Use a timing light and through the inspection cover on the L/H side of the car.
Also what negatives would you get from your vac advance not working? would the timing just stay at 10 degrees at high revs? not advancing as the revs go up? which would affect combustion?
Sorry for the hijack.

What is the correct way of setting the advance? With a timing light through the hole in the back of the block on the passengers side.

whats the correct settin for the timing? 10Degrees BTDC.

The vac advance hose from carby should be disconnected from the diaphragm and plugged when doing the timing.
The vac advance hose is connected to a pin hole sized port in the carby just above the main butterfly, the more vacuum there is with throttle open the more it will advance up to about 34-36 degrees total (10 degree static plus 24-26 vac adv.).
If you look down the carby you can see the vacuum port.
