just need to know so i can drill/tap the end to replace the circlip.

case hardened, early shafts are easy to aneal and tap, some of the later shafts have a deep skin almost through hardened and are a pain. I have swaged in inserts for the hard shafts and tigged the insert in and then tapped the insert with good results.
