I want to know what you guys reckon is the best/most comfy tourer

And no i don't have $205,000.00 to buy a new Unimog or even $150,000.00 for a secondhand one

Must have a diesel version (only buying something if i start making biodiesel)

R51 Pathfinder is winning so far as the seats all fold flat to give a longer boot space than a Patrol or 80 Series with the seats removed.

a na diesel is gonna make a painful tourer. Try to find something turbo'd maybe?

Factory turbo diesel 80 series, or aftermarket turbo diesel 105 series are comfy as (used heaps for my fieldwork), and still can play hard.

If IFS is acceptable, then the pathy, 100 series/200 series, paj's and Jackaroos are decent.

patrols don't ride well to me, i hated the thought of driving the 1000k's home after fieldwork the twice we did use them.

rangie/disco's are comfy, but build quality/electrics/reliability... i'll leave to you to decide.

Troopy or Defender are really the only 2 with a load space long enough to sleep in, landy electrics arent as bad as what some say especially the current ford powered defender, if you want to run homebrew bio then no current common rail diesel will like it - you want mechanical injection for that.

Would definately bolt one on

Don't think the bio would be a problem; I think this would make good quality end product. A smaller version though as i think making over 500L at a time is a bit too much.

coil/coil... all GU wagons. my only GQ experience was one i drove from melb - adelaide for a mate who bought it interstate. to be polite, i much rathered doing that drive in my old 45 series troopy

the toe rag would be nice.

You have got to be kidding .. a 25+ year old leaf sprung POS with NHV levels off all modern charts over a Coil sprung anything ..

I am 192CM (or about 6 foot 4) tall and was quite happy behind the wheel of a GU even for extended periods IE 1000+ kms a day for several years and over 150,000Kms over all.

I'm 6'3" and was quite confortable in my GU as well.

The IFS T'Diesel 100 series was more comfortable to drive, towed better (GU was petrol). But the GU was far better off road.

This would be a serious option that I would consider. They are comfotable, have good shocks and the ride is nice.

The 100series IFS is a bloody shocker, my bootyfab old POS rangie was better on dirt tracks and it was 84578602" tall
As for the 200 series... never catch me in one of them. King of the ROAD (key word)!

People probably get it from sitting in one.

Im 6'5 & get very uncomfortable with my knees pressed against the dash in either the drivers seat or the passenger seat.

The 100 Series that we test drove before purchasing the gu had PLENTY of room. The GU Has less room in the drivers & Passanger seat than our 4-Runner.

Maybe the GU4 is worse than the earlier models but they certainly are not what id call roomy & comfortable.

As a tourer, it seems like a bit of a mute point. Traveling down a highway or long dirt road at 80kph+, it won't really matter if your in 5th gear or in an Auto.

My experience is that touring still involves plenty of gear changes. I mean I drive a manual and love it, but I find the "I don't like autos" viewpoint to be basically an argument that inexperienced drivers make. Especially those of us who first got used to small, fast manuals when we started driving. I used to say it myself. But nobody who has driven a lot of different vehicles in a lot of different environments says "I don't like autos."

The reality is that autos are better for some things and touring is one of them.

That's my 2 cents worth.

Autos are not better at it; it just takes less effort and doesn't fatigue you as much when driving long distance.
I have driven many vehicles of varying sizes/luxury levels, including autos on a regular bases and long distances. (old f100-auto, new accord-auto, old hilux-manual, newer elantra-manual, newer falcon-tiptronic, new RAV4-tiptronic, new lancer-tipronic, new triton-auto, old jeep-auto, etc.)
I just prefer manuals, although i would have a tipronic auto because it is the best of both worlds

But you're asking about a "comfortable tourer". Surely less effort and less fatigue are a big part of "comfortable"? I know it's just matters of opinion but imho in saying you prefer a manual you are taking a big step away from the "comfortable tourer" goal. I don't mean to sound argumentative, you should get whatever tourer you want!

(But it'll be less comfortable if it's a manual).

I understand what your saying and accept that many people would agree with you.
If i can drive a modded '91 hilux manual with WRX bucket seats for 10 hours straight up to Clermont (1hr above Emerald) i think anything else will be a big step up in comfort and the laborious effort to change gears won't really affect me.

Comfortable to me means you don't feel like your in a massage chair that has been souped up to rattle your spleen out of your body
I am even thinking about putting the air cushioned truck seats in whatever i get head room allowing

I can see your not being argumentative; we just have differing opinions
